My son has an evil twin

I swear to you, the invasion of the bodysnatchers has happened at my house and my once sweet and content one year old has been replaced with a whining, screaming, tantruming "thing".  What the heck?!  It seriously happened over night about 1.5 weeks ago.  Add to this major separation anxiety and we have a full blown high maintenance child.

Such a full 180 turn from how he has been his entire first 14 months of life, I'm trying not to be surprised but it's taken me for a loop for sure.

Tell me your stories and make me feel better.  Please.  I beg of you.

  • My thought would be his reaction to the new baby.   You had your little one recently, right?  He may be sensing all kinds of new things with the new LO, and it is his way or sorting things out.  Hope things get better fast- I can only imagine house stressful it is!

  • I agree that it could be the arrival of the new baby.

Desmond won't want anything to do with me until I start doing dishes or cooking. Then he will pull on me and scream until I pick him up. Most of the time I let him scream. But God that kid will not give up! He has screamed for a ful 15 mins. before I had to stop cooking and go play with him instead. Then of course the whole process starts all over again.
  • I have no doubt that the arrival of a baby brother is playing a large role in his behavior.  I'm also thinking some is an age thing--getting frustrated because he can't quite communicate his needs/wants.  I hope it's a short-lived phase because I miss my happy and independent boy!!

  • I keep joking that LBB isn't advanced in any developmental area EXCEPT emotional development.  This sounds almost exactly what we went through at 12 months, and hit my friends kids between 15 and 17 months.  (And this is why I thought most of y'all were nuts when you were saying 12-14 months was your favorite time of their lives)

All of a sudden, my kid, who could play by himself for a good long time, needed to be on my leg all the time.  He only wanted to play with me.  He was hysterical most of the day between tantrums and separation anxiety.  He would throw himself down on the floor at least once an hour, we kept waiting for the hand flailing and feet kicking to start.  Daycare drop offs were a nightmare, because he would get red faced, choking, hysterical tears.

It lasted about 2 months for us.  And then, overnight, it just stopped.  During that time period, I worked in ways to "play" with him while I was doing anything else (this is when he started "cooking" with me - stirring and adding ingredients).  I think this could be harder for you with 2 other kids, but maybe your daughter could help out at keeping him distracted and entertained?

  • Yeah, we are there too. The baby doesn't make it better either. But mainly... He is frustrated easily. And that makes him a gremlin.
