Trust your motherly instincts!

SFM: trust your motherly instincts

So Brooke has been sick for almost two weeks now. It started with a bad cough which led us going to urgent care because it sounded like whooping cough to me. That was last Wednesday night. The doctor checked and everything was fine.

Fast forward to Friday night and her fever was 101.2 this scared us and made is think it developed into something more than just viral. We called in and they said its not bad until 102 and don't come in until 104.

All weekend long it kept getting higher and we kept her on ibuprofen since Tylenol does nothing for her.

Fast forward to Tuesday. I stayed home with her and brought her into the normal clinic we go to. The night before her fever was 103.2. I insisted they test her for stuff, especially the flu since 3 kids out of 6 have the flu at daycare. I mentioned the 1.5 year old at daycare has pneumonia too. They did a flu test and sent us home sayin it was just a cold, nothing we can do. Since she was relatively happy, they said we should Bring her in if she seems uncomfortable and starts fussing a lot...wtf?

Well that night her fever spiked to 103.8. DH and I were not comfortable with that so we brought her in again. I felt dumb because just yesterday they said it was a cold. We demanded tests. They did every test imaginable including a chest Xray. Turns out she has pneumonia!!! And her fever spiked to 104.1.

Just wanted to let you mom's know my story. Be your child's health care advocate. If the doctor doesn't suggest what you think is normal, ask! Keep going in if you think something is wrong! Brooke never got crabby, she has been extremely happy lately so for them to say she isn't sick because she is happy? I'm still fuming!!! Oh and this is a Great example of why you should take your kid to the doctor....hints at a certain mother.

  • How scary and disheartening that you had to push for tests. How is she feeling now?

  • I had something similar! Took my son in twice for bad congestion well walk in hour is only the nurse practitioner. She said all I'm hearing in an echo. Skip ahead to NYE labored wheezing sent us to the ER they tested him and it was RSV! I was so pissed because I had been bringing him in saying there was something wrong! When his twin sister seemed off we went straight to the ER and skipped the nurse practitioner! Same thing! Anyway I hope your baby gets better soon! I've been dealing with this for a month so I know how hard it is!

She is doing really good now! The antibiotics seem to be doing their job. She was spiking fevers every night between 103104 and last night she didn't even have a fever! I'm so happy we caught it when we did.

  • Good job mom! I'm glad you stuck with it and didn't listen to the doctors 'she's fine.' hope she's better soon!

  • You are so right!!  DS2 had RSV in December, and I called his pedi 3x, then we took him to the ER twice before he was admitted to the hospital for 2 days.  The on-call pedi was so mad because she said that he should have been treated earlier, and therefore, wouldn't have ever had to be admitted.

You really are your LO's only advocate--don't be afraid to speak out/insist on things!  You know your LO better than anyone else--even if that someone else has a medical degree!

    Hope Brooke is better soon!!

  • I couldn't agree with this more. I've had to fight twice for my older son when something wasn't right. DR's dismiss things incredibly easily....

I really hope she feels better soon.

  • Aww, I hope she is feeling better very soon!

Isn't the chest xray awful?! When Lexie was a baby we were getting ready to go on a trip and she had a cold and a slight fever so I took her to the pedi and the words of his mouth were, "That's what tylenol is for." I was a ftm and felt ridiculous, until we were halfway to our destination and she stopped eating and drinking and I ended up with her in the emergency room! They gave her steroid shots and a couple of different antibiotics, and gave her fluids.. We never went back to that pedi.

  • Holy freaking sh*t!  Pardon my French, but this is nuts.  I mean it really scares me that we can't even trust our Dr's.  I am a FTM and I try and read everything I can but this is why I get so stressed out, this exact reason.  I'm so happy that you pushed and pushed and knew to do it.  I hope little Brooke gets better soon and THANK YOU for sharing.

  • Thank you for sharing!!  I have always been a little bit of a pushover and this is a good lesson for me to stand my ground when I think something is wrong with DD. I feel very comfortable with my pedi as he is well know around here and actually caught a cancerous lump on my cousin but still.  Noboby knows our babies like we do.  Hope she feels better soon!
  • Its very annoying and frustrating how Dr's just dismiss parents.  Good for you for pushing for testing!  Same thing happened with my LO when he had the flu.  The dr said its just viral and he has to ride it out.  I said "oh well I thought it might be the flu" and they did a test and that thing turned positive in like 2 minutes (normally a 15 minute test).  My poor baby.  Push, push, push for your babies moms!

  • Good job, Demo! Doctors really annoy me sometimes with the way they just dismiss  your concerns. So glad to hear she's doing better. I would have done the same. I have done this several times with DD so I definitely won't hesitate with DS.

  • Demo, that seriously makes me so mad for you and Baby Brooke!  I cannot believe it took that many visits for them to order a chest xray on a 5 month old...  Poor Brooke!  Hoping the meds kick in quickly and resolve the pneumonia asap.  (((HUGS)))
