SFM: trust your motherly instincts
So Brooke has been sick for almost two weeks now. It started with a bad cough which led us going to urgent care because it sounded like whooping cough to me. That was last Wednesday night. The doctor checked and everything was fine.
Fast forward to Friday night and her fever was 101.2 this scared us and made is think it developed into something more than just viral. We called in and they said its not bad until 102 and don't come in until 104.
All weekend long it kept getting higher and we kept her on ibuprofen since Tylenol does nothing for her.
Fast forward to Tuesday. I stayed home with her and brought her into the normal clinic we go to. The night before her fever was 103.2. I insisted they test her for stuff, especially the flu since 3 kids out of 6 have the flu at daycare. I mentioned the 1.5 year old at daycare has pneumonia too. They did a flu test and sent us home sayin it was just a cold, nothing we can do. Since she was relatively happy, they said we should Bring her in if she seems uncomfortable and starts fussing a lot...wtf?
Well that night her fever spiked to 103.8. DH and I were not comfortable with that so we brought her in again. I felt dumb because just yesterday they said it was a cold. We demanded tests. They did every test imaginable including a chest Xray. Turns out she has pneumonia!!! And her fever spiked to 104.1.
Just wanted to let you mom's know my story. Be your child's health care advocate. If the doctor doesn't suggest what you think is normal, ask! Keep going in if you think something is wrong! Brooke never got crabby, she has been extremely happy lately so for them to say she isn't sick because she is happy? I'm still fuming!!! Oh and this is a Great example of why you should take your kid to the doctor....hints at a certain mother.
Re: Trust your motherly instincts!
She is doing really good now! The antibiotics seem to be doing their job. She was spiking fevers every night between 103104 and last night she didn't even have a fever! I'm so happy we caught it when we did.
You are so right!! DS2 had RSV in December, and I called his pedi 3x, then we took him to the ER twice before he was admitted to the hospital for 2 days. The on-call pedi was so mad because she said that he should have been treated earlier, and therefore, wouldn't have ever had to be admitted.
You really are your LO's only advocate--don't be afraid to speak out/insist on things! You know your LO better than anyone else--even if that someone else has a medical degree!
Hope Brooke is better soon!!
I really hope she feels better soon.

Aww, I hope she is feeling better very soon!
Isn't the chest xray awful?! When Lexie was a baby we were getting ready to go on a trip and she had a cold and a slight fever so I took her to the pedi and the words of his mouth were, "That's what tylenol is for." I was a ftm and felt ridiculous, until we were halfway to our destination and she stopped eating and drinking and I ended up with her in the emergency room! They gave her steroid shots and a couple of different antibiotics, and gave her fluids.. We never went back to that pedi.
Its very annoying and frustrating how Dr's just dismiss parents. Good for you for pushing for testing! Same thing happened with my LO when he had the flu. The dr said its just viral and he has to ride it out. I said "oh well I thought it might be the flu" and they did a test and that thing turned positive in like 2 minutes (normally a 15 minute test). My poor baby. Push, push, push for your babies moms!
ETA: I hope your baby girl gets better soon!!!
