C-sections

Going into labour naturally then c-section?

I am pregnant with my 3rd child, and doc does not want to consider a VBAC. Which is fine, i really am not going to fight it. My previous C-sections were fine and I healed fast.

My question. Can I ask my gynea to go into labour on my own,and wait it out till 40 weeks, to make sure baby is ready to come? My 2nd was not ready and ended up in ICU for nearly 2 weeks after birth with breathing problems. I had him at 38 weeks and 2 days, which imo was to early.

Is it safe to wait?

Re: Going into labour naturally then c-section?

  • I had my c-section scheduled for when I was 40 weeks.  One Dr wanted me to do it at 39, but I wanted to wait until 40.  My Dr and another one were both okay with my choice.  They did want me to remember that the baby could come early.  DD2 ended up coming 3 days early when I went into labor on my own.  We ended up still doing the c-section, just early.

  • I'm not sure a doctor would let you plan on going into labor on your own and then doing the c-section without having an actual scheduled c-section. There's only one way to find out for sure, though, and that's to ask your doctor. We scheduled my repeat for 39w2d, and she said if I go into labor before that, then I would just go in and get the surgery, otherwise I just go in when I'm scheduled.

  • It's recommended that c/s are done after 39 weeks, so you have a good argument for waiting. You could also schedule your c/s for as late as possible (maybe past 40 weeks, even), and then come in when labor starts. I don't think most doctors want to wait for labor to start, but I think it's a reasonable request on your part.

This. I would begin with trying to schedule the c/s for as close to 40 weeks as possible. It just depends on why your doctor won't allow a VBAC whether actually going into labor is safe for you. Is it policy or do you have significant risk factors? Those questions are best answered by your doctor.

  • My doctor has a strict 39 week rule - some women go into labor on their own and have to come in earlier, but I don't think he would wait longer than 39 for me to go into labor on my own (but I tend to have fairly big babies).

  • My doc has a 39.5 week rule. Something about the baby's lungs...

I'm due on Feb 18th but we're doing it on the 15th because the 18th is a holiday here in Canada. I hope that I can go into labour naturally. But if not, I feel pretty sure that we're getting as close to the date as possible.

I think it's bad practice to schedule it after 40 weeks- just because of the possibility of the placental insufficiency.

  • My OB will not do a scheduale c section before 39wks. This will be my third and I have a high risk of rupture so going into labor is out of question if it happends then I have to get to LD fast.
