We met in a town called --- Jefferson, and though it has such a sentimental value to us, we can't help but feel like it'll always be "Your parents must have loved President Jefferson.
We love Ever for the meaning and Everly, but feel that it doesn't grow up well/might as well just name the kid Beverly but don't like that name despite good associations.
I love Katherine, nn Kate, but we won't use it as a fn because it's DH's cousin's wife's name. A pretty big stretch, but that side of the family can be kinda weird and picky, and I just don't feel like dealing with it. We are using Kate as a mn though!
Also, I love Tessa but DH doesn't like it. We both like the name Karla, but it's too rhymey with our ln.
PCOS with long, irregular cycles First round of Clomid in May 2012= BFP #1, DD born January 2013 BFP #2 in January 2014, DS born September 2014
I met an Alistair a few years ago, and I've liked the name ever since. For some reason though I just can't see myself using it. Maybe because his nn would end up being Al, and I don't care much for that.
Ariadne for a girl...to confusing for the general population. Afraid she would forever be called Audrey/Arianna/or something similar
Tadhg (to difficult in US)
Vaughn (friend used Von)
Archer (cousin named his boy Asher...to close)
Dylan (to close to SS's name)
Bram (to close to DS's name)
...and it goes on and on...
I'm just a lurker over here - but had to post because I so rarely see my daughter's name, Ariadne.
Surprisingly we haven't had many issues with people confusing her name, just a lot of pronunciation questions. A lot of people think we made it up, so it's fun to explain the mythology behind it. Anyways, tickled me to see it show up!
While I'm here I might as well post my own -
We loved Darwin for a girl (nn Winnie) but don't think we would ever pull the trigger
Jayna. this is what I always wanted to name my first daughter, ever since I was about 13 years old. Then my dad got remarried and her daughters are Jayme and Jenna. I don't want people to think I named my daughter after them.
Holland (for a girl)- Husband knew a Holly whom he has a really bad association with and he cannot get on board with the fact it would be a potential nickname. Della- Husband vetoed it. Sable- Husband vetoed it. Coral- My best friend named her cat this which weirds me out now. Hudson (boy)- Popularity. Rhett- Husband vetoed it. Cade- Too close to Caden which is so crazy popular. Bennett- Close friend used this name.
Sweet baby girl will be joining us in 5/13.
Ivy Lucille joined us on 9/22/10.
Winter Katrine joined us on 12/1/08.
Became Mr. & Mrs. on 7/17/06.
Henry - I know way too many baby Henry's right now
Elizabeth - family name on my dad's side but I can't stand any of the women named this so I refuse to pass it on
Avery - I think it's a boy's name but can't risk my son being in first grade with 3 girl Avery's.
ETA: Julia - our niece's name
Jacob Edward - I've loved Jacob forever and Edward is my H's mn. This was at the top of my list when I was pregnant with DD until a good friend clued me in on the Twilight connection. I was devastated and will forever hate Twilight and Stephanie Meyer for ruining our name.
August because my brother & his fiancee already have a nephew with this name (her brother's son), and because DH doesn't like it. It is my favorite boy name, and it's my great grandfather's name.
Helena because DH doesn't like it.
Leona because DH doesn't like it, and I especially love it because it is a family name.
And, while this is a little different situation-wise, Renata because that is the name I gave to our baby who miscarried last summer. DH also doesn't like this name, but naming her is something I did more for myself than anything, so his opinion doesn't matter. We will never use this name for a living baby.
For boys, I've always like Harrison and Jackson but they've become so trendy now that I wouldn't use them. I also like Asher, which has become popular, and Archer - but wouldn't use it due to that TV show.
For girls, my GP names are January and Matilda. I would probably use them but DH hates them, so it's a no-go.
Sophie. I absolutely love it and it was my great grandmother's name but FI has an F last name and I think she would have a miserable time trying to pronounce the two together.
Sophia - was at the top of my list but has become way too popular
Devonny - childhood favorite, but I hate the nn "Devon" or "Dev" for a girl
Eudaimonia - ancient Greek for "happiness", chosen for the same reason as Sophia (I'm a philosophy scholar), but I recognize that it wouldn't be kind to saddle a child with this name
Kathryn- FI had a best female friend, same spelling, who really effed with our relationship and even though they aren't in contact anymore I don't think I could name a daughter that. I LOVE the name though.
Sarah- Our last name starts with S and I don't want SS for initials. I also won't do an A first name for this reason which gets rid of
Andrew-because I don't want anyone teasing because of what one more S would spell...we both got teased as kids and I hated it.
Those are the top three that I always think about. Gah. It's gonna be fun naming our kids, German last name starting with an S, oh boy!
Ariadne for a girl...to confusing for the general population. Afraid she would forever be called Audrey/Arianna/or something similar

Zimger, I always love seeing your lists. Ariadne was on mine too, and dh vetoed. And Tadhg, but obviously with T it doesnt fly.
Ha, thanks...sometimes I worry I get over zealous with my posting. Tadhg has a great sound and I like the meaning. I thought seriously about using the anglicized version but then learned it could also be used as a slur (in Ireland) so I decided against it.

That's good to know!
In the event I ever have a girl I may just have to add it back to the list.

All have been used by immediate family. Well, Rebekah has been "claimed", and while I don't think anyone "owns" a name, I care about the person who claimed it too much to keep it on my list.
Re: What names do you love but...
I've always loved the french name Genvi?ve for a girl, and the Scandinavian name Bjorn for a boy
ETA: I just realised my girl name starts with a G for girl and my boy name with a B for boy. haha
Jefferson & Ever/Everly
We met in a town called --- Jefferson, and though it has such a sentimental value to us, we can't help but feel like it'll always be "Your parents must have loved President Jefferson.
We love Ever for the meaning and Everly, but feel that it doesn't grow up well/might as well just name the kid Beverly but don't like that name despite good associations.
Declan. It's just a tad too close to our LN but it's still on a list for any potential #2.
Elizabeth- SIL's name. I would use a variation for a mn though.
Ditto PP. Love Winter, I just couldn't work up the nerve to actually use it. Plus it is WAY too rhymey with our last name.
Jacoba, Carly, Giselle, Ava (too popular)
Sam (sounds weird with DHs LN), Simon (DH has a cousin with the name)
Oh I have a big list
Ariadne for a girl...to confusing for the general population. Afraid she would forever be called Audrey/Arianna/or something similar
Tadhg (to difficult in US)
Vaughn (friend used Von)
Archer (cousin named his boy Asher...to close)

We loved Darwin for a girl (nn Winnie) but don't think we would ever pull the trigger
Rigel for a boy (DH hates it)
Elizabeth - Too popular (lots of friends' kids have the name)
Ava - Too high on the SS list
Sophia - Same ^
Jacob - Popularity/friends' children have the name
Ryan - My nephew's middle name
Grace - For whatever reason my mom loathes this name and the derogatory remarks would ruin it for me
Catherine - I have a friend named Katherine
Scarlett - I'm a HUGE Gone With the Wind fan, so I would get teased a lot! DH would never okay it
Caitlynn - It would be a form of my MIL's name, but DH didn't like it (although he did like Caitie - go figure).
Being Ashlee in the 80s when Ashley was crazy popular, I steer clear of the most popular names
.
Everett
DH says it's too "old".
Kate- DH has a cray cray cousin named Katie.
Audrey- I'm afraid it's way too close to Aubrey. Which I hate.
Luke- Cousin named her son this and I have another bad association.
Married my best friend 10/12/12
TTC 1 since 10/12
NTNP Fall 2013 to focus on a healthier lifestyle
Willa- It is too close to my name
Halle- I have a niece Hailey
I know I have more, but I'm blanking right now.
Girls: Flower or nature names - would be terrible with our LN.
Boys: I met a little boy named Sirius a while back. Even without HP, I'm wouldn't be gutsy enough to use it.
George - with our last name, it's a famous person
Henry - I know way too many baby Henry's right now
Elizabeth - family name on my dad's side but I can't stand any of the women named this so I refuse to pass it on
Avery - I think it's a boy's name but can't risk my son being in first grade with 3 girl Avery's.

We can't use colors, nouns, and word names because LN is a noun. Think "Rhodes"
Also can't have anything ending in "S" because LN ends in "S" like: James Charles or Rose
Clementine - guilty pleasure name I don't have the guts to use.
Wren - vetoed due to a bad association.
Thomas - can't use because of family issues.
Lachlan - We both absolutely love it, but we have family who just named their son this. It just feels wrong to use it, like we would be copying them.
There are also names that I love but won't use because of their popularity,
Ethan, Liam, Claire, Owen, Charlotte, Emma.
I really like Hugh, but it's a family name on FIL's side (not relatives I'd want to name a child after).
I like Theodore (Theo or Ted), but DH has a close friend with that name.
I like Ezra, but I already have a Nora and wouldn't want two names that end with "a."
And I like Margot, but, as above, I'm not cool with a Malcolm and a Margot.
TTC since 11/05...ectopic pg 4/08...early m/c 6/09...BFP 10/5/09!

Nora B...June 15, 2010...8lbs, 8oz...Med-free birth!
TTC #2 since 7/11...cycle #3 of Clomid + IUI = BFP

Malcolm...September 21, 2012...8lbs, 6oz...Another med-free birth!

Boy: Mason, Axl, and Noah
Girl: Winter, Zoe, Eloise, and Katherine
Girls: Evangeline, Clementine, Cordelia
Either MH hates them or they sound ridiculous with our last name.
Girl: Marin (DH doesn't like it), Leila (DH doesn't like it)
Boy: Zach (it's my brother's name), Nathan (DH doesn't like it)
Kathryn- FI had a best female friend, same spelling, who really effed with our relationship and even though they aren't in contact anymore I don't think I could name a daughter that. I LOVE the name though.

Connor-my cousin named her son this
Emily, Hannah, Victoria, Rebekah
All have been used by immediate family. Well, Rebekah has been "claimed", and while I don't think anyone "owns" a name, I care about the person who claimed it too much to keep it on my list.
