BFer check-in

I'd love to hear how any of the BFers that are left are doing.

How has your supply been keeping up?

Are you pumping?

Any weaning plans or have you started?

Any recent frustrations/concerns/funny habits your LO has developed while nursing/pumping?

Re: BFer check-in

  • I was mostly an EPer (BFed once or twice a day), but am weaning off it. I'm down to 2 pumps a day and LO hasn't nursed in 2 weeks.

I'm pretty sad about it, but I knew it was going to happen eventually.

One funny thing is that LO has a tendency to grap with his hands when he's eating. When it's a bottle, it's just my shirt, but when he would nurse he would grab at my skin. I'm very ticklish, and since nursing usually took place at bedtime, I had a hard time to not laugh while he was nursing because he was tickling me!

  • I'd love to hear how any of the BFers that are left are doing. It's still going well, but I'm wondering when the honeymoon will be over. I'm not eager to give up nursing as much as I'm excited to have the freedom to do whatever I want, even if it takes longer than 4 hours, without having to worry about feeding LO or finding a place to pump.

How has your supply been keeping up? It's slowly fading away, but LO is taking less. He's always taken 4oz bottles, but now he either has a bottle left over at the end of the day, or he only takes 2-3 oz from a bottle at a time. When he's with me on the weekends, he definitely does not empty me, as I still feel full after he eats, but he eats more frequently because of it. I don't know if he's self weaning or if this is normal behavior. I'm completely confused about what self weaning would even look like.

Are you pumping? Blah. Monday-Friday. 3x/day. I'm thinking about removing the last pump of the day when he hits 11 months, but I don't know if I'll have enough freezer stash to compensate. We've been introducing WCM as permitted by our pedi, but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to start supplementing at 11 months. If I could even do 1oz WCM with 3oz of BM, then I know I could get away with not pumping at the end of the day.

Any weaning plans or have you started? Oops. I kinda explained that above. Like I said before, I'm not against nursing him when I'm around, but I'm looking forward to having a little more freedom. I'll take away one pumping session at a time, and I feel like he's taking the lead on weaning himself away from as much milk and greatly increasing his solid intake. This kid could eat all day long!

Any recent frustrations/concerns/funny habits your LO has developed while nursing/pumping? LO is getting too long to fit across my lap on the glider, so he puts his feet on the arm rest and pushes himself up and down the entire time he eats. He also is terribly distracted. The room is PITCH dark, and he obsesses on random lights on the humidifier or monitor. I'm lucky most days for him to nurse for 5 minutes. In the morning, he'll nurse longer, but there's a lot of twiddling going on. He's started grabbing my nipple with his fingers (and his razor sharp finger nails), and he'll tell whole stories to my boob. My kid is so weird.

  • My supply kinda went down during my trainin class. I was only getting 2 bottles instead of the normal 3. However, I think it has something to do with my water intake and stress lately. I'm doing my best to do everything I can to get it back to normal.

My current plan is to stop pumping during work hours around her first birthday. I may continue morning and night feedings for a little while, but I'm not sure. I felt like after a year, I would be so ready to wean and be done, but as it gets closer, I realize I'm not. I don't like pumping, but I enjoy bf'ing. It has allowed me to develop a deep bond with C that is evident. I love that I can comfort her, and the snuggles and quiet time are some of the best moments of the day.

When I nibble on C's fingers while she's nursing, she gets this little sly smile while attempting to stay latched. It's adorable. Also, she's started mimicking a lot, so if I stroke her hand, she will stroke my hads and fingers. Although I forgot all my parts today, it worked out ok. The hand pump worked surprisingly well. Another current frustration is misunderstanding from people who have no concept of bf'ing. Today my grandmother asked when I was going to "quit." When I responded, a year, she asked why I was going to wait that long. Well, bc then she can switch to WCM or bc that's the recommended age....or how about because I'm her mother and its my decision...

Sorry that turned out so long...

  • Still on the boob here too!  Although I switched one nursing in the afternoon to a formula bottle a few weeks ago to begin weaning (but we haven't gotten any further).  We're down to 3x a day now - 7:00am, around 10, then around 7:00pm.

My supply has definitely tanked over the last month; I know it's counterproductive to switch to a bottle in the afternoon but I would feel completely empty and LO would want to nurse almost constantly during that time of the day, I think cuz he was thirsty and wasn't getting anything!  But it has seemed to level out now.

I haven't had to pump in forever which I am so happy about!

I'm really torn on weaning Shawn.  On one hand, I want my boobs back (and so does DH!)!  I want to be able to drink a big cup of coffee and not have the baby up all day and night because of it.  On the other hand, I love BFing.  I can't really wrap my head around not doing it.  How do you comfort LO?  How do you calm him down?  Anytime he's upset, hurt, teething, etc, I nurse him.  What would I do if I stop BFing?

    *Gosh this is super long...sorry*

I had to laugh, Steel and Sharrison, at your comments in the last section.  Shawn is the exact same way - he's super long and will kick the sides of the glider until they come unsnapped.  He will also stick his fingers in my mouth and he'll do that same 'sly smile' when I chomp (gently :)) on them.  It's adorable and I love the time we can spend together.

Really good this time, I also don't stress too much about it like I did last time. He LOVES to nurse.

    Are you pumping?

No, since he won't take a bottle anyways, I haven't pumped since the summer.

Any weaning plans or have you started?

No plans to wean anytime soon. Unless I get KU again and we will go from there.

Any recent frustrations/concerns/funny habits your LO has developed while nursing/pumping?

Ahh he melts my heart he is really sweet, he signs for milk and buries in my chest making a grunty noise. He reaches up to touch my hair or face.

I'm still EBFing... I'm so glad I stuck out the first few painful, horrid weeks!

How has your supply been keeping up?

I come home everyday for lunch and feed her...that has helped maintain my supply grealty.

    Are you pumping?

    I pump around 10am and 2/3pm M-F

Any weaning plans or have you started?

No plans. I would love to BF until she's around 10-12 months.

Any recent frustrations/concerns/funny habits your LO has developed while nursing/pumping?

She gets distracted so easily. She used to tug but has stopped-thankfully! I love when she looks up at me while eating and smiles.

  • How has your supply been keeping up?

All seems to be well here!

    Are you pumping?

No, he won't take a bottle (much to my chagrin). I can't wait until he reliably drinks something. It will be less stressful for me! I can't believe I bought a new pump and can't really use it!

Any weaning plans or have you started?

Not started yet. I don't currently have plans but I think that around a year is when I'll start thinking about it.

Any recent frustrations/concerns/funny habits your LO has developed while nursing/pumping?

Not too much. We had some biting exploits (which were awful! My first didn't bite me!) and I'm super pumped that he's not sleeping very well lately, but he's just such a joy.

I assume so, I Bf on demand since I'm a SAHM. We had some issues at the beginning. We thought she had relux for a while (we had her on meds)..which she may have had but things worked out (no meds anymore). she's not crying at the breast anymore. It could have been overactive letdown.

    Are you pumping?

Every once in awhile to have something for DH to give her when I'm not at home  which is rare...maybe once a month for my book club

Any weaning plans or have you started?

I would like to wean at a year, not sure how to go about it though. We want to start trying around the one year mark for another LO.

Any recent frustrations/concerns/funny habits your LO has developed while nursing/pumping?

She doesn't seem to eat as long and any tiny sound distracts her. Good thing it's just us at home during the day, so no distractions. I'm curious to see how the next child does bfing with a toddler running around. Also, she likes to raise her right leg while BFing. Sometimes we will make a game where she raises it and I put it down. She starts to smile while BFing...so cute. But I try not to distract while eating bc I want to make sure she eats well. She's hasn't honed her womanly skills of being a multi-tasker like we women are now:)

  • How has your supply been keeping up?   My supply sucks right now. I'm only getting 2ish ounces when I pump at work and he takes 4 ounce bottles. I've started taking supplements again but at this point I'm not sure its going to work.

Are you pumping?     I pump at work.

Any weaning plans or have you started?     This is up in the air. I planned to nurse until 18ish months but my supply is so bad I feel like I need to start supplementing formula. I'm 90% sure he isn't getting enough from me. Once supplementing starts I think my supply with get worse and there we are.

  • How has your supply been keeping up?

Not good.  I used to have a big oversupply and would put away quite a few oz a week to add to my freezer stash.  Ever since I had a really bad stomach bug back in November I have been pumping three oz less than what he eats a day care.  I have been eating into my freezer stash and it is down to less than half of what it used to be.  I am hoping it will last me but we will see.

Are you pumping? Yep.  Three times a day at work but not at all on the weekend.

Any weaning plans or have you started? I would like to go down to just a morning and evening feed at a year so that I don't have to pump at work anymore.

Any recent frustrations/concerns/funny habits your LO has developed while nursing/pumping?

He is all over the place.  I think he has been eating less while nursing but he is still eating the same amount at daycare.  It's hard to get him to actually drain me.  I have been offering both breast now too which I hadn't had to do since he was a newborn.  He is also starting to pinch my nipples or grab my skin.  That is not fun.  At least his biting seems to have stopped.

  • How has your supply been keeping up?  Supply has tanked.  DS takes 3-4 bottles at DC and I just barely make enough for 1 of those.  I nurse when he gets up and before bed.  On the weekends, I nurse a few times a day.

Are you pumping? I've dropped down to 1x/day at work and not at all on the weekend.  My 1 pump/day usually gets me 3-5oz.

Any weaning plans or have you started?  I'm going to start here soon as I don't think he's really getting much from me at the before bed nurse.

Any recent frustrations/concerns/funny habits your LO has developed while nursing/pumping?  When he got 4 top teeth at once a few weeks ago, he was doing a LOT of biting.  Also, he does not like his fingernails trimmed so there ends up being lots of scratching of mama when he nurses.

DH recently put up some jungle animal decals behind our glider.  When DS finishs nursing he sits up and babbles to the animals.

  • We are still keeping up with BFing! :-)

How has your supply been keeping up? It was dropping a bit, but started taking oatmeal and It helped a lot! I would say supply is good right no1

Are you pumping? I've dropped down to 1x/day at work and not at all on the weekend. My 1 pump/day usually gets me 3-5oz.

Any weaning plans or have you started?  At one point I felt like my baby was self-weaning...but for now we are going strong. I am planning to continue to nucre/pump until he is one!

Any recent frustrations/concerns/funny habits your LO has developed while nursing/pumping?  OMG he bites pretty bad!!! He has seven teeth (three bottom ones and fout top ones) he has made it pretty hard to continue to nurse him, but I just try to teach him that it hurts mommy! :( he alsom plays with my hair and gets supper distracted!!!
