Officially a Miscarriage

So even though my numbers went up from 743 Mon to 1704 today there is no pregnancy sac.  There was a tiny spot that the dr said is not big enough to be anything.  I have to stop all my medications.  He said I can try again and this is no indication to how another cycle will turn out.  Just sucks!

I have to respectfully disagree here.  All of Jadwedd's betas have been very low with slow and slowing doubling times as she's gone along.  IMO she needs support moving on, not encouragement to stay stuck in limbo for even longer than she's already had to painfully endure.  I don't mean this to sound harsh, but I recently went through a chemical pregnancy after my first IVF and sometimes honesty and reality is better than sugarcoating and carrying things on.

Jadwedd, I know we have already talked a bit, but I'm sending you more hugs.  I'm so sorry you are going through this but I will be here to support you every step of the way!

Why are they throwing in the towel with rising betas?  I mean, it may end up that way, but there's a whole slew of literature very recently poo-pooing the strict "discriminatory zones" for diagnosing miscarriages and 'poorly progressing' pregnancies. I'm very surprised they wouldn't keep monitoring. The more accepted school of thought on betas is that at 1500 you should be able to see a viable pregnancy on translational scanning. The fact is that people have realized that not all pregnancies "read the book". Matter of fact, the doubling rule is only true in about 67% of all pregnancies. There are normal pregnancies that don't follow that curve.

I will tell you that I learned that lesson very clearly a few years ago. I had a patient with rising betas but nothing on ultrasound. She wasn't bleeding and had no evidence of ectopic. Her betas went to 5000 and still nothing. Her betas went to 10,000 and I had nothing but an empty sac. I talked to her about D&C but she asked me if she could wait another week. Beta soared to 33,000 and when she came back a week later, I had a beautiful baby with a heart beat! I almost terminated a perfect pregnancy. Very heard lesson learned. I realize this isn't the norm, but I hate that they're not even giving you a chance, especially if they don't believe it to be an ectopic and you aren't having any bleeding to cause suspicion.

Please talk to them. Ask them if there's any harm in waiting. It may not pan out....but what if it does?

The dr thinks that I will miscarry naturally, there is just a small sac that is too small to be anything.  He said it could be a sign of ectopic.  If I don't miscarry naturally he will do a d&c.  I asked him if it could just be on the small side or a late implanter.  He said no, that with the numbers and everything he thinks it is either ectopic or that it was genitically damaged and my body is fighting it, the only thing keeping it going is the pio.  Even my mom who has to go with me because dh is oot for work, never wanted to give up and kept talk to my stomach all month and she thinks it is time to throw in the towel.  Just sucks.  But I will try again when the dr says it is ok.

Last week was the week that I asked for another week to try to give it a chance. But I am almost 7 weeks with 1704 beta and nothing in my uterus Thank you so much for your advice. He is concerned that it may be ectopic so that is why he doesn't want to give it any more time. I wish it worked out like it did for you patient, but I know in my heart that it is over this time. I just really appreciate you taking the time to write and explain it all.
