Toddlers: 24 Months+

transitioning to toddler bed

Our 21 month old LO climbed out of her crib several times and for safety reasons we decided to switch her crib into a toddler bed.  She watched us convert the crib and played in it that day and went to bed in there.  We thought great! That was simple.  20 minutes after she went to sleep she screamed and came out of her room.  I imagine she was having a nightmare as she was saying something about our dogs crate.  We tried  to put her back and sit with her to no avail.  Eventually she fell asleep on the floor on her rug.  We figured after a rough night back and forth to our bed we wouldn't push the toddler bed thing and allowed her to sleep on her floor with blankets as she requested.

So.. it's been 3 weeks and she won't go in the bed.  We went out and she picked out a dora bed set and we read her big girl bed books and she still says no.  " No bed. Sleep on the floor please".  PArt of me feels like it's fine to let her sleep on the floor until she feels comfortable to transition to the toddler bed.  I would like opinions though as to how you  transitioned your kid, or if you feel like I should not set up a "bed" on the floor for her.

thoughts?

TIA

Re: transitioning to toddler bed

  • I don't have a problem with you setting up the bed on the floor. Would you consider moving her to a twin or full size bed instead of the toddler bed? Sometimes they feel confined in the toddler bed because they simply outgrew it, maybe that's why she climbed out. My daughter has done well in the toddler bed thus far, but it looks too small for her already and I plan on getting her a twin bed as soon as we find a new apartment. She could have had a bad dream that she fell out of it too. Maybe she just needs a little more time. I know it's frustrating.

  • Yeah. I would suggest moving the bed to the floor. Of course, as I type this.. my toddler is asleep on the floor next to the mattress on her floor. She probably naps  9 out of 10 times on the floor and most nights she falls asleep on the floor. We just move her at night after she falls asleep. We moved her to a bed back in June. I guess I have just decided that sleeping on the floor is not that big of a deal. I figure by the time she is 18, she will be sleeping in a bed :) .

  • I think we got really lucky with our DD and she loves her new bed. Though, I would not oppose to her sleeping on the floor if that works. My neice will sleep in a bed but always has to have someone sleep with her. My SIL and BIL haven't slept in the same bed together in over a year. So if it's between the child sleeping in the bed with someone or on the floor by themselves, the floor is fine. Maybe put the mattrice on the floor and see if she'll sleep on that? Good luck!!
