Special Needs

IEP question

My son is having an updated IEP next month.

I found out that his therapist is requesting more therapy time.  He goes 3 half days in Early Childhood Education with speech therapy and occupational therapy.

Can I request one extra day since his needing more help?  The class meets four times a week, I didn't know till here in the last week.

If their updating now does that mean we don't get his yearly over the summer?  I am assuming they are gong to say this his updated and next years IEP.

TIA

Re: IEP question

  • My understanding is that you can have IEP meetings more frequently than annually but not more infrequently.

It is very reasonable to have an IEP meeting now for the remainder of this school year AND another IEP meeting at the end of the school year or over summer to address needs for the next school year and to evaluate how the changes implemented now are working.

  • I'm a lurker but thought I would chime in, DS's IEP gets updated the beg of the school year, Jan (mid way through) and the end of every school year. The beg to see what has changed throughout the summer and talk with the new teacher, Jan to make sure things don't need to be changed and adjust accordingly and the end of the year to assess how everything that was done worked and what will need to be worked on next year. Also, they encourage "parent driven" anything! You can request anything you feel will be helpful or unhelpful. Hope this helps
