half marathon??

two years ago i ran my first (and only) half marathon. i loved it! i really want to run the same one this year. its in april, so i plan on following the same 10 week training program that i used last time. problem is, i have no clue when i will have time to train. DD is 8 months, and i stay home with her during the day. i do have a gym membership that offers childcare, so i could do some of my training there. but i hate running on the treadmill and prefer to run outdoors. i am home with DD all day, and then i work in the evening from 6pm to 10pm. i dont get to bed before 11:00 pm most nights.  the only way i would be able to train outside is if i get up super early before DH goes to work and run before DD wakes up. do you think i should commit to the half marathon? i am worried i wont be able to find the time to train, or be too exhausted from going to bed late and getting up early. what to do, what to do...

Re: half marathon??

  • DS is 10 mo & I did my 3rd half marathon in October.  I pretty much ran every night after work & because DH always travels during the week, I had no choice but to drag the pooch w/ me & push DS in the BOB.  All "long" runs were done on the weekend when DH was home, and if he wasn't, I'd get a sitter (happened twice).  I constituted all "long" runs as anything over 5 or 6 miles.  So, if you have it in you, get a jogging stroller & take DD with you during the day - assuming it's not freezing outside.

  • Buy a jogging stroller and run WITH DD.

I SAH with my 5 yo and 2 year old and I ran 2 halfs last year (May and Sept).  I would save my longer runs for days DH was home.  I would run 3-7 miles with my little ones in the double jogger.  I have a 7 yo that is in school full time and summers were hard to run because she would get tired riding her bike more than a 5k.  Long runs (6-7 miles) are perfect for naptime because the girls get bored and fall asleep.  Plus running while pushing a stroller (especially uphill) is an awesome workout!

  • Like PPs said, get a Bob and run with LO.

ETA: My local gym will allow members to use the childcare for up to two hours per day while they run or cycle outside as long as they bring their cell phones.

  • i do have a jogger, but its too cold here to use it with DD. i hadnt thought about running outside while using the childcare at my gym, i will have to check into that. We get 2 hours a day too
  • Take baby with you! My 7 month old has been riding along since she was 4 months old and loves it! Marathon training does take commitment and sometimes you just have to fit a run in when you can. Keep it up, it's one of the best things you can do for your child, you are they're role model!!
  • Most gyms (unless they are big enough not to notice) require you to stay in the building while you kid is in their care.  I ran my first half last summer (DS would've been about 18 months at the time) and I did my runs during the week at 4am. I work FT and was able to find a plan that planned anything over 4 miles for the weekend.  If you really want to do it - you can.
