Today is a huge day for me and my daughter. We have our weekly NST and BPP as well as a growth scan. If he hasn't grown enough in the past 3 weeks since our last scan and/or she is nonreactive AGAIN on her NST I will be sent in for a steroid shot for her lung development and then be induced. I'm trying to be positive but I'm honestly terrified. Any thoughts, prayers, words of encouragement, or advice would be much appreciated. Has anyone else had an early induction? Steroid shots? Preemie at 33 weeks?
Re: Big day
The best thing you can do is try to remain calm. Easier said than done, I know. It's wonderful your doctors are being proactive, and that you will have time for the steroid shots before delivery IF you are induced.
I hope she has grown and is bouncing around today.
I have a physio ultrasound today and internal ultrasound to check for cervical length, in addition to another fFN (fetal protein test - an indicator of preterm labor). If I fail any of those I have to get steroid shots, too. It's scary, but it's really out of our hands, so I'm trying hard to come to peace with it all.
I'll be thinking of you. Please keep us updated, okay?
I don't have any experience with a 33 weeker but I really believe they made a huge difference for my son so I'm sure they will for you as well!
BFP #2 - 7/1/12 - Met my lucky charm Alexandra on 3-16-13!!!
My thoughts and prayers go out to you. Of course you are scared, but at this point I'm sure everything will turn out for the best, no matter what happens!
With DD1 my water broke at 33 weeks. I was given 1 steroid shot dose, they wanted to get at least 1 more in me 12 hrs later but she ended up being born before they had a chance. However, she was perfectly healthy and fine, just a bit small (4 pounds 13 oz.). She stayed in the NICU for 2 weeks, just getting bigger and learning to eat. She is now 5 years old and has been the easiest baby and child ever. I know we were very lucky and blessed but from what I know, babies tend to do well at 33 weeks.
GL and prayers and keep us posted! Know that you are doing the very best for your child no matter what!
My daughters were born at 33 weeks, 1 day. They spent 28 and 30 days in the NICU, and were 3lbs 12 oz and 4lbs 2 oz, respectively. I had steroid shots at 24 weeks and 31 weeks. The steroid shots were in the butt but were no more painful than all the blood draws, etc. I was induced after one of the girls' water broke - the induction failed after about a half day and I had an added complication, so we had a c-section. The c-section worked out well for me and my kids.
While the NICU days and the first few months thereafter were difficult, my girls are healthy and they are caught up to other kids their age. They are now 22 months.
If you get a chance before the induction, ask to talk to a neonatologist or NICU nurse so that you can get a "briefing" on any challenges that your 33 weeker may face. I think the most difficult thing for me as a mom was the IV in one of the girls' scalp - they couldn't find a better place to put it on her.
Best of luck to you - 33 weekers are known to do great!
