Can we talk about baby poop?

Can we talk about baby poop? (This may get graphic...)

Here's my situation: DD is 6 weeks old and is exclusively BF since birth. Her first week or so she met all poop diaper 'requirements' right down to her poop turning seedy. Since then, this has changes signicantly. She now goes once every 2 to 3 days and it's like mustard, no seedy-ness. I mentioned it to the pedi at her 1month appointment and they said since she is gaining weight, passing gas, not struggling to go and peeing a lot not to worry. I also have pumped several times after she nurses to make sure she's at the hind milk, and I'm satisfied that she is.

But of course I'm still worried about it. So please tell me, how ols is your LO, how often is your LO going and what's it like these days? Thanks!

Re: Can we talk about baby poop?

  • My LO is exclusively BF at 5 weeks old and has about 8 dirty diapers a day. He's gone about 12 hours without pooing, but that's the most so far.

  • My LO will be 4 weeks on Saturday. She poops maybe 3-4 times a day right now, she is EBF, it has slowed down from going almost every feeding. Poops are dark mustard color but not usually seedy at this point. I know green foamy/mucousy poop would be a concern or blood in the stool, but other than that I think there is a good range of normal.

  • Camila is EBF. She has had a LOT of gas lately and I get little squirts in just about every diaper and one or two big poops. Hers are mustardy and no seediness left, really. She gained 15 oz in 14 days.

  • LO is ebf and she has gone over 24 hours without pooping. Usually, once she gets to the point where I start to worry and think that I should call pedi, she poops shortly after. Yesterday she pooped 2x and I was really excited.

  • My pediatrician said it's perfectly normal for breastfed babies to go up to 10 days between poops. I don't think that's totally right, and I'd be freaking if LO went that long, but I'm supposing every few days is OK so long as she continues to be comfortable and not needing to struggle to go.

  • I asked my doctor about this yesterday actually. My LO is 5 weeks old, EBF (through pumping these days) and the doc said that since he's gaining weight &not having any excessive gas, etc. its perfectly normal for babies to go 2 or 3 days without pooping, especially during a growth spurt when they are using almost every single calorie. He said as long as you are still getting wet diapers, baby is fine.

  • There is a huge range of normal when it comes to poop and EBF babies. My sons pooped infrequently; Daphne poops several times per day.

  • Lurker here, but my first son was EBF and from weeks 4-8 literally only pooped once a week. One time he went 8 or 9 days in between poops. I was a FTM and that freaked me out, but he was gaining fine and had lots of wet diapers so my doc wasn't concerned. This one now has done one to 2 days with just a squirt of poop before he has the next big one, but I don't worry about it because of what I went through with my first one!
  • Amelie will be six weeks tomorrow and is EBF. Her pooping has gone from about six times a day to two. I am not complaining! It's also this ridiculously bright orange color, which is apparently totally normal on the BF'd baby poop color scale, lol.

Atticus is still pooping several times a day, also EBF, but is only 2 weeks old. His poop is neon orange, too!

  • At 5 weeks, LO stopped having several daily poops and started pooping once every 2-3 days.  It's mustardy, not seedy anymore.  My first pooped after almost every feeding for a long, long time so the first time this guy went 2 days without pooping, I was concerned.  But it's fine and the poop he had was enough that I felt comfortable that this is just "his" normal. :)
