BFing question - advice needed

Layla bit me while nursing one day last week, and although I didn't think she broke the skin she must have, because it scabbed over, and hurts like a mothertrucker every time she nurses, and each time the scab gets bigger, tonight it started bleeding (after nursing for about 15 excruciating seconds) and eventually fell off - the scab, not my nipple. I don't think it's a clogged duct, I've never had any pain like this before while nursing. I put on Nuk Moisturizer but I don't know of I should stop nursing on that side at all, see a lact. cons. or just suck it up and hope it passes? Layla only nurses for a few minutes at most once sometimes twice a day, and sometimes not at all, she would probably be fine if I didn't offer but I don't think I'm ready to end it just yet. Sorry for typos my internet is being slow and I'm sick of fixing them. Any ideas on what might htelp to make this heal faster and be less painful??

  • Can you just not offer that side for a day or so? If you get uncomfortable you can hand express.

  • Ouch!  That sucks.

I always found that rubbing some bm helped my nipples more than the lanolin cream.  Not sure if it would help much for this, though (or if you're able to express enough at this stage; I know I have trouble squeezing out more than a drop at a time).

  • At this stage I'm not worried about expressing, I doubt she gets much more than an ounce or so, i think it's more for comfort than anything, it's not uncomfortable for me if she chooses not to nurse.

I think I'll just avoid nursing on that side, I'm calling the OB office tomorrow to see if there is a prescription cream I can get :( Boo.

  • I agree with LCass about rubbing your milk instead of lanolin.  I swore that's what kept me from cracking and bleeding.  Maybe put some bag balm on at night.  I swear by that shiz for skin issues, or even coconut oil.  If you can give that side a break, I would recommend it in order to allow some healing.

Oh, and your clarification on the scab, not your nipple falling off made me giggle.

Lol Thanks, Trying to lighten it up.
