Recovery Pain

This is more of a curiosity since I'm 6 months out from my 2nd cs and in no pain.

With my 1st cs unplanned emergency after 2 hours of pushing due to fetal distress I had a rough recovery. I was allowed to walk 12 hours after surgery and I was in unbearable pain to even get out of bed almost a burning pain that would take your breath away. It lasted about a week every time I would get up and down. Pain pills didn't touch the pain at all.

At the time I attributed it to labor and pushing for so long. I was hopeful for an easier recovery with my second planned section.

Well, I had the same issue horrible burning pain to get up and down, also when walking the halls the night of, that pain pills wouldn't touch. Nurses knew I was in pain and tears but I was on top of the allowed doses so I couldn't have anymore.

What was that pain? Nerve pain....gas pain? Am I doomed to go through that pain again with a 3rd section despite Percocet and ibuprofen? I would have rated my pain at a 10 both times the few days after delivery.

I hear so much about easy recoveries and was curious if others had this level of pain despite narcotics.

Re: Recovery Pain

  • My first was searing/tearing/burning pain at the edges of my incision (scheduled c/s).  I had ibuprofen and vicodin for that one.

My second was heavenly (also scheduled c/s).  No pain.  I had a morphine kicker on top of the ibuprofen and vicodin.

The morphine made me vomit for about 6 hours afterward, but I'd take that over the pain I had with my first.

Another thing that may make a difference is the surgeon.  Did you have the same OB?

I had a different OB and different hospital for my second.  A new surgeon may have better skills, or their techniques may make a major difference.

  • I get the burning pain and the terrible gas pains.  I was so bad the first time with the gas pain that I couldn't move my body to hit the nurses button to get them to come and help me.  It was awful.  I am not an easy recovery either.  I just take it for what it is and realize that I probably will have the pain.

I will say that my pain managment was much, much better the second time around.  They would give me my meds a little before they were due and I was on a little bit higher of a dose than the first time.  The nursing care was so good the second time that it really helped me have a better experience.

I had a terrible bleed though after which caused a massive bruise everywhere below my section scare so my second time I had tons of pain from that too.

    Same hospital, different surgeons.

I guess it's just something I would have to deal with if I had a 3rd. Maybe I can talk to my OB about better/different pain management.

    Thanks for your input ladies!
