Spinal Block

How many times did it take your anesthesiologists to get in and administer your drugs?

I'm 2 c/s in, and I've yet to have a doctor do this quickly.  The first c/s it took them 5 tries and a longer needle, and the second c/s it took him 11 tries to finally get in there.

I started panicking the second time and had to have the doctor stop what he was doing because the room was going white.  I felt like I might pass out.

Is this common?  Were you girls anesthetized easily?

Re: Spinal Block

  • one try both times, but I have bad reactions also.  My blood pressure plummets and I get massive head pain.  Not fun, but they both got it first try.  My IV on the other hand it took them 12 times!!

I have never really heard of it being that difficult, but did they give you a reason so that you know if you have to have spinals or epidurals in the future?  is it the way your spine is, etc. I would get the reports just so you know why it might be difficult for them for future knowledge.

sorry that happened to you :(  that sounds miserable.

  • Yeah I had no troubles.  Probably took then around one minute to get it done completely.  I had to lay down pretty fast as I could feel the pins/needles sensation almost right away in my legs.  Getting my IV in my hand was 10 times more painful.

  • They got it on the first try both times. I am so sorry that it is hard for you! I have much more trouble with the IV, and it takes them a few tries.

  • 1st try the 1st time. I think it was from me being in shock. 2nd time it took a little longer because I was so nervous and afraid I might feel something. Hopefully this time it's the 1st try again.

  • Once, but it was by far the worst part of anything involving the surgery including recovery. It hurt like a mug, and I am terrified to do that again! Thank God I didn't have to labor, because I am a baby.

  • Both csections, they only had to try once.

After my second, I've had some headaches and back pain.

  • I've only had one CS and it only took one time but I had a REALLY hard time with it. It took 25 minutes for me to be numb and I still had a little bit of feeling. I talked to my dr about it and he said that it could have been a fluke but it could just be that my body doesn't take the medicine well. It's the same concept as when someone's epidural doesn't take, the same possibility stands for spinals but obviously, is not an option because it's major surgery. Talk to your dr about it and see if maybe there's something that can be done to make it an easier process? GL!
  • One try! It was so magical!!

  • With my 2nd C-section, it took 3 tries and about 15 minutes total.  I remember her saying something about narrow channels (honestly, I was in a complete panic at that point because she was moving a needle around in my spine and they had to stop because I was about to pass out so it's a bit blurry for me) and that she was going to try another spot and once she moved to that place, it went in easily.
  • Let me start by saying I wish I had never seen this post... lol

I was hoping that my experience was rare, but apparently it wasn't and it could get a whole lot worse.  Mine took two tries.  My son was breech and I had a hard time getting into the optimal position.  When the first try didn't work, I must have jumped a little.  The anesthesiologist got nicked and he started freaking out.  He was yelling at me and my OB was yelling at him. It was awful.  It's my biggest fear of the possibility of a RCS.

  • Yikes, 11 tries?!?  How scary for you!  It took my doctor two tries but it was my own fault.  He told me not to move and counted to 3, but I jumped when he said 3.  He was not too happy with me.  I told him not to count, to just stick it in, which is what worked!  Please talk to your ob/gyn about why this is taking so many tries--that is not a time that you need to be anxious about getting ready for surgery!
