if u entended bf...eating food issue?

Hi! My lo is almost 18 mos and in the past month or two hes upped his bf's and some days he eats great with table food but its tricky to get him to eat when he would rather bf. He will sometimes outright refuse to eat food and will yell to nurse. Its been a tricky balancing act and really makes me a little stressed worrying that im doing something wrong. Hes been gaining weight great since he was born...15mo appt his weight was 66ile. Does anyone else have a problem or just an "issue" getting ur lo to eat real food over bfing?

  • Could he be sick or teething?  DD would refuse solid foods in both of those cases.  Otherwise she loved to eat.

  • No not sick...maybe teething...but its been a struggle....at least in my head....for a while now.
  • DS didn't really eat much until fairly recently (and I think perhaps I'm making less milk because I'm pregnant). I just saw it as more ice cream for me to eat. Smile It's really not a problem unless there are other health issues (low iron, for example).

Some kids just LOVE milk. They'll still outgrow it eventually.

  • My ds went through several bouts of increased nursing as he approached 2...He may be cutting teeth, coming down with a cold or just feeling like he wants extra cuddle time with you :)  You aren't doing anything wrong. There were many times that my ds would have preferred mama's milk to any solid food...I would still have him sit at the dinner table with us (so I could at least eat) and then would cuddle and nurse him.

Hang in there and try not to worry :)

  • Also keep in mind that toddler eating patterns in general are kind of wacky and they will eat a ton some days and very little on others, and one day they will love a certain food and then refuse to touch it the next, etc.  You have to let go of expectations to a certain extent.

  • I think that is called being a toddler. I personally feel confident to be BFing when DD goes on a food strike since I know she is getting something! As long as he has energy and is growing well, I'd just follow his cues.

  • Ditto everyone, I think it's just normal toddler behavior. My LO definitely has ups/downs with solids, and with nursing too. I've stopped trying to find a pattern because it seems to have no rhyme or reason most days.

Like PP I am happy to still be BFing because I know he's still getting great nutrition even if he's being finicky about solids.

  • Awesome thank you so much ladies! Its good to know this is normal...he has great energy so i dont see him having any problems. I just know my friends son eats alot and ive read on the boards how some of the lo's are eating great all the time, and its just been on my mind alot lately. Thanks again! And if anyone else wants to tell me about ur experiences with this i'd love to hear it! :
