feedings while sick

DD2 is congested, coughing, and has a runny nose. We took her to the pedi yesterday and she doesnt have an ear infection and is otherwise all clear. She isn't eating much though which worries me. If your LO has been sick, did they not eat much? For example I BF her at 6 am. She has since had only 1 oz by bottle around 1130. I'm keeping an eye on her diapers.

Re: feedings while sick

  • My LO has the same symptoms and is refusing bottles. She will BF but throws up if she eats too much... My pedi said as long as she has 23 good wet diapers we are okay. The concern is dehydration.

  • I'm an RN on a pediatric unit and with our sick kids we make sure to do suction with saline immediately before feedings...if the baby can't breathe they're less likely to want to eat. My LO had the same problem last week and doing that seemed to help...if they have tummy trouble that won't help but it helps with congestion. But hydration is definitely key! If you notice a decrease or stop in wet diapers or if the "soft spot" on LOs head starts to look sunken in they're probably dehydrated..so keep an eye on that!
