Coming to visit and clueless

We are coming to the DC Area the week of/following Memorial Day. We arrive on Sunday and have somewhere to stay in Clarksburg starting on Thursday. For the days before that we want to take the kids to DC and do lots of touristy stuff!

I have never been to the area before and am looking for suggestions as to somewhere possibly outside of DC to stay, I just looked up DC hotel prices and am hoping to find somewhere a little less pricey, yet still convenient.

Try Old Town Alexandria, VA for hotels and places to stay/things to do. It's very convenient to DC (you can ride the Metro) and the Old Town area is very family friendly with fantastic restaurants and shops. The National Childrens Museum just opened up across the bridge from Old Town in the National Harbor ( https://www.ccm.org ).
