Natural Birth

birthing tub questions....

Hi everyone,

I'm a first time mommy and am having a natural birth. I am 18 weeks right now. I wanted to know about birthing tubs. If you used one how helpful was it? Did you buy it or did your midwife or doctor provide you with one?

At first I wanted to have my baby at the birthing center, but then we found out it was $1000 more than a home birth. Any information y'all can give me would be awesome.

Re: birthing tub questions....

  • most midwives home birth or birth center if they dont automatically provide one will provide one for the birth for a fee, usually $200-$300. for me a birthing tub is essential. my homebirth midwife provided one with a fee and i used for the largest part of my labor(i dont like pushing in water idk why) if the midwife doesnt provide one you should be able to rent one. i have seen some people use inflatable baby pools but in my opinion they are not deep enough. congrats on your first pregnancy! and so glad to hear you are planning a HB :D

  • I had a hospital birth where I labored in the tub provided in the room, so I can't speak to the fees or renting a tub.  However, I would say that the tub helped me immensely.  I had a relatively quick and intense labor, and laboring in the tub (with DH spraying hot water on my back) was incredible.  I would have pushed in the tub had they let me (downside of a hospital birth) - I was very stubborn about getting out of the tub because it felt so good.

I second the pp's thoughts on the inflatable baby pools - they're not deep enough.  I labored on my hands and knees and most of my body was submerged, and that was important for pain relief for me.

  • For my home birth we were able to rent a tub from our midwife for $200. We had it two weeks before my due date and I went 2 weeks late. I ended up having to transfer to the hospital so I wasn't able to deliver in the tub but that was the goal. This time around I'm having a hospital birth but I am delivering with a CNM and have the option of a waterbirth, which I'll be trying for again.

  • My midwife supplied our tub, we just bought the liner. It was amazing. I spent most of my labor in there and also delivered in the tub!

  • The tub was a must for me.  It really helped with my back labor and I do not think I could have relaxed through contractions any other way. I delivered in a hopsital which had tubs in every room.  The doula I used just had a baby and used a birth tub.  She purchased it as she had a home birth.  She loved it and it was not to expensive.

  • My birthing center had a tub in each room. For me, it was essential. I finished my labor in the tub and had a water birth. But it definitely made the end of the labor much better in my opinion! I want one for all of my births!
