Nursery Lighting??

Just curious what you all are doing for lighting in your nursery? I had originally planned on this cute floor lamp from Ikea, along with the matching table lamp:

However, I just discovered it's not for sale at any Ikeas within several hours of us. I'm bummed, and not really sure how to go about finding something similar. So, I wanted to see what you all are planning to do, or if you have suggestions for where I can find something like this (around the same price too!).

I love the idea of a chandelier, but we rent, and while our landlord is pretty flexible with us and what we do with the house, I doubt he'd like that, not to mention we don't really have the time or capabilities to install one.

Re: Nursery Lighting??

  • I'm just leaving the ceiling fan with lights on it for main light and then I got a cute small lamp that sets on the bookcase for "nightlight".

  • We just use the ceiling light and a smack desk lamp.

That's a very unique lamp...unfortunately it might be tough to find something similar.

For DS's nursery we hired someone to install a funky, modern ceiling light from Ikea and then we ended up moving a year later. I took the light with us because I love it, but we don't have any use for it right now because DS's room (which will also be the baby's room) has recessed ceiling lights already built in. It's currently sitting in our basement. :(

  • We don't have a ceiling fixture in the nursery, so we're using a small table lamp next to the glider and a floor lamp in the corner.

That lamp is really cute.  Land of Nod (online)  has lamps for a slightly higher price than that, with tons of color choices.  That's probably where I'll end up ordering ours.  Target.com also has lots of lamps, you might be able to find something unique to fit your tastes.

  • We are mainly using the ceiling light, but we've put a dimmer switch on it so when we are up with the baby at night we will have enough light to see what we're doing but not to fully wake him (or us) up.  We also have a small lamp on the dresser.

  • We have a ceiling fan with a light in both DS's room and our room (where LO will be).  We also have little table lamps in both rooms with red light bulbs in them.  We have found that the red light is way better for middle of the night wakings because it rouses the baby (and parents) less.  Highly recommend having a red light bulb light.  You can pick up the bulb at any hardware store in the "party" light bulb area.

  • We took down the ceiling fan in our spare room and put up a $35 mini chandelier from IKEA when I did my daughter's nursery. This LO doesn't have a nursery yet (and probably won't until they are already here) so no lighting yet.

This. DH is going to install a dimmer switch, and we'll probably get a cute little lamp.

  • Just a tip - get a very small reading lamp, like the tiny travel kind you can clip on your book.  MH got me one for when I read my Kindle in bed pre-baby, but it ended up being PERFECT for middle of the night diaper changes.  I clipped it on the diaper basket on the changing table, and it gave just enough light for me without having to turn on any larger lamps.
