1 double stroller vs. 2 singles

My apologies if this question has been asked before; I checked the FAQs and didn't see this specific issue there. My 8 month old girls are getting too long for their DSNG, so we're starting to think about the next stage stroller-wise. We would like to get the City Mini double stroller, but the problem is we're pretty sure it won't fit in my trunk (I drive a Honda Civic hybrid; the trunk is even smaller than a regular Civic). My question is, have any of you tried to get along with two single strollers instead of a double stroller? For us, most of the time we're both with the girls when we go out, so we could each take a girl in a single stroller. The only time it's just me with both girls is when I pick them up from day care. My crazy thought here was that I could push one in a single stroller and either carry the other one or put her in a baby carrier. But I don't know if this is realistic, or if there are situations we haven't thought of where a double stroller would be necessary.

Alternatively, if anyone out there has successfully managed to fit a City Mini double into a Honda Civic hybrid trunk, please let me know :) Thanks!

Re: 1 double stroller vs. 2 singles

  • Look into the City Micro. I've been borrowing my grandmother's Honda Civic lately, and you are right, the Mini does not fit. A single stroller and baby carrier could work, and I've heard of some ladies linking together 2 singles. Not sure how that works though, so I can't give you more insight on that.

  • Linking singles does work, but you end up with something too wide to fit through a standard door. We've done it at the airport a few times.

What about a Combi Twinsport or a Jeep double? They both fold up pretty small. They sell both at BRU so you could probably check the fit before buying.

  • I just posted last week about the City Mini Micro Double.  Look back a page or two on this board.  I have a Pontiac Grand Am and the Micro Double fits beautifully in the trunk with tons of room to spare.

I could not fit a regular city mini double in my trunk.

Albeebaby.com had the MICRO doubles on clearance.  Only the grey color is left for $249 - see link.  I would snatch it up quick. Albeebaby was the only place I could find the stroller.

and to answer your other question about single strollers, I also had single SNG strollers for my twins.  I missed having the option of taking them out separately so I just purchased the SIngle City Micro strollers at my local Target over the weekend.

The SINGLE City Micro were being clearanced out at my local Target and I got them for only $60 each!  Incredible deal.  Normally $199 each.

Both singles fit in my trunk too, but with more bulk than the Micro double, but still have room other side.

the city mirco singles are NOT on sale online at target.com yet.  just on clearance locally in store.  so check around.  every target is different around me and prices items out at different rates / times. I could not afford 2 at the normal price, but 2 at $60 plus I had gift cards from Christmas too, made those strollers free for me.  I was really lucky.

    Good luck!

  • We keep the City Mini in one car and two single umbrella strollers in the other car.  Our City Mini fits in both of our cars (I have an SUV and H has an Accord), but if it didn't and we knew that one of us was going somewhere and needed the double stroller we would just make sure that person had the car with the double stroller that day.  We both have car seats in our cars so it's no big deal for us to switch for a day.  The Micro does sound like it will work for you, though.  I love our double stroller and couldn't deal with not having one.  It's good for going on walks with the girls by myself (MIL also does that on occasion with the girls) and even when we're out and about together it's nice that one of us can be pushing the stroller and the other can be entertaining the kids or doing the shopping or whatever.  If I go somewhere with one baby and will need a stroller I just toss the umbrella stroller in my car.  We also had a DSNG when they were younger.

We've been using the Combi Twinsport for nearly a year now and I love it.  It's lightweight but not flimsy, fits through a standard doorway, spins on a dime and folds up so compact. I'd definitely reccommend it.

  • I third the Combi, I have it ad my backup/throw on an airplane stroller and it is super compact. Would definitely fit in a very small trunk.

  • Thanks, ladies! This is all really helpful. I looked up both the City Micro and the Combi Twin Sport and took some crude measurements of my trunk; hard to believe but I don't even think the Micro would fit, which is too bad because it looks great. However, the Combi also looks great, seems small enough to fit, and I like the cheaper price tag too :) Thanks again.

  • We've linked two singles before for airport use but I would NOT recommend that option for everyday use! I agree with looking into the Combi or the City Micro double.
