PSA: If earrings make your ears itch....

I noticed a lot of people in the baby ear piercing thread talk about how their own ear piercings give them problems.

Have you tried nickel-free earrings?  They worked for me.  I used to have a terrible time with my ears: itching, cysts, swelling, etc.,  until I started buying nickel-free.  Just a thought.

Of course, I'm not saying it would work for everyone, but I thought I'd throw that out there in case you haven't tried it.   Yes

You can buy nickel-free earrings pretty much anywhere.

Re: PSA: If earrings make your ears itch....

  • When my piercings are fresh I can only wear gold or surgical steel. However, I have found that most piercing problems are actually due to the gun than the earring. Since the gun forces a blunt object through and doesn't take a tiny chunk of flesh out like a pro does with a needle.

  • I used to wear the diamond/white gold studs for weeks without problem. Fast forward 6 months and I can't go 30 mins without them hurting. Earrings be weird.

Same goes for my tattoos tho. Some days certain tatts just stand up and ITCH!

Interesting! I never knew that tats itched for some people.  My husband has a couple and he's never complained.  I wonder if it has to do with where they are located....  or maybe you're very slightly allergic to the ink?

Did they have any white ink in the tats that flare and itch? For some reason white is the most easily rejected ink.

The way it was explained to me, my reaction is a metal sensitivity. I had pieced ears for ever with no problems, but in the past few years, I can't wear most earrings anymore.
Even good gold causes my ears to turn bright red and itch There is no "pure" gold for posts; the metal is too soft for that but most people would be OK with 14K. I have one pair of 18K studs I can wear for a few hours and some platinum studs I can handle all day. Surgical steel doesn't do it for me I reacted to surgical staples a few years ago. The doc who removed them has similar issues himself and suggested I try sterling silver.
Where do you find earring labled "nicklefree"? Would these be costume or fine jewelry?

You find them at claires. They are called sensitive earrings. Usually they are silver.

They are at Wal-Mart and Target too.  Very cheap... around $5 for a set of 6.

FWIW,  I can't wear gold either... but I CAN wear nickel free just fine.

  • I used to be able to wear sterling silver but even those bother my ears now.  I can only wear gold posts now and even then, one side always starts to hurt after a few hours.  I don't know what the deal is.

  • So what is "nickelfree" made of? I was told I was allergic to nickel which is in surgical steel, surgical staples, and any alloy metal. I can wear pure sterling, platinum with no problem.
  • Yup. I appreciate the PSA though!  My ears are super temperamental.  I can't wear cheap metal anywhere on my body (no costume jewelry for me!), but my ears are even worse.  Sometimes earrings that didn't bother me at all when I wore them for a whole day will bother me the second I put them in on another day.  No matter which pair I put on, I almost always have to take them out by the end of the day.  It's weird.

  • Everything irritates mine--gold, nickel, etc. My mom let me wear her diamond earrings---VERY good quality ones and they still hurt my ears. I was able to wear them the longest out of all earrings--about 4 hours, but then they started to itch like crazy.
