I'd post this to working moms but I just like you guys better lol
I need to know WWYD in this situation.
My current job (retail) cannot afford to pay me what I would need to justify going to work and putting DD in daycare. They are downsizing, and retail this time of year is slow to begin with.
I had signed DD up for daycare before I was made aware of this (beginning of December). I tried signing up for a subsidy program to get assistance until the summer when the hours would potentially pick up, but we did not qualify for the newly structured program (she said had this happened last year, we would have; isn't that always the way).
Luckily, last week, I had an offer come up for a job in my field (animal health) working for our local humane society. They typically only work for minimum wage but the director there was impressed with my resume since was a supervisor at an SPCA before DH and I moved here. They do not have one in place there and she was interested in "creating" the position for me. With that in mind she was able to ask me what I would expect to be paid and what hours I would want. I told her in very few details the situation with DD and daycare and explained that the pay would have to make me putting her there worthwhile. She said she'd pass it by the board and get back to me.
After that, I had a second offer from a good friend of mine who runs a store close to where I am now, but she has no manager to work under her and make her life easier. She asked me if I wanted THAT position. I told her I had an offer in play somewhere else but I'd keep it in mind. However, after daycare costs I'd only bring home $300 a month in a job I'm not crazy about.
Jump to today, DD's space at daycare is only on hold until tomorrow (her potential start date is the 21st) and I have still not heard from the Humane Society. I can only take the HS job if they can offer me the pay I need because the hours just aren't there. I have worked in this environment before and I will be surprised if they can because of their limited resources. However, this is the job I want SO bad. What would you do in my position?
A) Call the daycare tomorrow, beg for an extension to give the HS more time and also to decide if I want to take the retail job or SAH. Call the daycare and say YES we want the space! Because even if the HS falls through, $300/month take home pay is worth it.
C)Wait to see if the HS falls through. If I lose the daycare spot, it wasn't meant to be, stay home with my daughter. (Where we'd have to make a tight buget, but we'd survive until DHs promotion next year).
I feel like I've been dealing with this too long, and I'm too tired and confused too make a clear decision. DH says "do what will make you happy" but I don't know what that is. I need an outside opinion. Help.
Re: I need advice May Mommas *UPDATE*
I could leave in the future. Do you mean say yes for the spot and if the job doesn't pan out in the next week or so leave?
ETA: If I do that the standard is the 2 first weeks paid up front and 3 weeks notice/paid to leave. So if I start just to leave she's there for 5 weeks we have to pay for regardless.
I honestly think you can pick C. YOu can always budget and stuff and if you need to go back to work before a year is up then deal with it then. Or if the HS calls because they position was approved you can deal with day care then.
I wouldn't do B. You would possibly end up stressed and that's not worth $300.
Of if you want to do A keep reading my long list of questions. Are day cares hard to come by in your area? Is this a spot for a full-time/part-time slot in day care? I would see if I could part time slot since it SHOULD cost less. I would call and ask the day care if they have a long waiting list. I know I thought ours did but they didn't. I don't like the fact they are giving you date to make up your mind. Can you pay a registration fee with a start date in the future at which time you would start paying? At my day care I paid a registration fee ($85) back in March 2012 his tentative date was in August 2012 but we moved it to Oct. 2012 and they had no problems with it.
Daycare is hard to come by, we put our names on wait lists before she was born and only heard back from this one (lucky for us it was our top pick) when she was nearly 6 months. Who knows when the next one would come along.
And it was a full time spot. Part time is cheaper, but there is a seperate wait list for PT.
Back at'cha
Got it, and back again. Thanks so much
Also like I've said before oh here I save enough though couponing and saving to make up the difference of what I brought home when I worked.
When I get some time on my computer I'll write a post on how.
I would love a post on this! I'm a bit of a weirdo when it comes to budgeting. I love doing it and finding ways to save money. I'm so leary of couponing it always seems that I can buy the store brands cheaper then what I could with a coupon so I don't normally use them. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.
So, I am biased. Mentally, I absolutely have to work to be healthy for DD (anxiety issues).
I would say B.
Lol everything : it's not about using a coupon to buy what you need that week it's about waiting and using coupons, sales and store promos to buy what you will use before you need it at rock bottom prices. I'll explain more later, right now I'm on my phone while bfing
I would start with asking the daycare for an extension, there's nothing like getting the job you've always wanted.
Good luck!
UPDATE
I decided it was better to stop by the daycare than to call for an extension. I thought it would show we were serious about wanting the space. When we got there the director was on the phone so the daycare teachers ushered us in to the playroom. She played with the other babies and we talked to the teachers. They were so nice and so good with her. It kind of made my decision for me. I told DH I'd sign her up regardless of the HS job, I'd take the retail job if that fell through. So we signed her up and then we went home.
I just resigned myself to the fact that the $300 a month wasn't the only benefit (it will help us pay off some of out debts faster) but the daycare will be good for her to get socialized and be able to play with other kids. I figured I'd just go with it and if I got stressed or found it wasn't worth it I'd just pull her out after the 3 weeks notice we'd have to give them. DH is military so in moving around I've had to do some boring/shitty jobs before so I'm used to it.
BUT THEN! The universe decided to cut me a break and the HS called this afternoon and offered me the job at the pay and hours I requested! I'm so excited! I get to do a job I want and went to school for. Plus DH will be starting school in the summer so we're bound to live here for the 4 years he's doing that so I won't have to move and leave that job right away! I'm really happy. Thanks for all the advice ladies. Lucky for me the best case senario just happened to work out!!
yay yay yay yay!!!!

Yep; that's the beauty of it. I was able to ask for pay and hours that made it more worth while than just taking the retail job. In any case, nobody gets into being a Vet Tech for the money (lol).
Thanks for all the support ladies, I'm so excited to start and until then we're taking DD to her daycare for a couple hours every other day to make her transition easier. We've gone twice already and she loves it (which makes me feel better too)
