Cover smells like poo?

So I used my new prefolds with a bummis cover this morning and the prefold did contain the poo but she peed so much that it was fully saturated and had a little leak out onto her sleeper. I don't think it was a fit issue more just that she pees a lot at one time, combined with a nap led to the leak. The part that I don't understand is that the poo stayed in the diaper but the diaper still stinks like poo. Does this always happen or is it only because the diaper was so saturated? I thought the point of prefolds and covers was that you could reuse the covers with a few changes but I don't want to put it back on her smelling like poo. If I have to use a new cover each time it seems silly that I bothered snaping it on her as well.

I'm not sure if this will help with your situation, but when I use covers and prefolds I swap out two covers all day (unless one gets poo on it). This way they have time to dry and air out between changes.

I also rotate two covers during the day if I am using prefolds. But if I find that one of the covers smells like poop after I air it out for a bit I treat it like it is soiled and just throw it in the bin and replace it. Doesn't happen with every poop diaper but mostly for some where I may not have been able to change her right away.
