Any Runers on here? kinda IF related vent..

So last year I did several half marathons and became addicted to getting my "bling". Then we decided to start moving forward and I am SUPER excited by it but at the same time it sucks! Becuase of all the "What if's?" I am not signing up for more races and it is hard to see them fill up and pass me by....

I guess it just makes me worried that the one thing that helps keep me sane is going to have to be put on the back burner, and it is going to really hurt even more sitting at home during those "race weekends" if I am not pregnant...

Anyways. No real point just kinda blah about it since I have one of my last races comming up and it will be hard to not sign up for a few more while there!Stick out tongue

  • TICKER WARNING

I was just on here to do the IF Grads check in and saw your post.  I can SO identify with how you're feeling.  I am a runner as well (4 full marathons, countless halfs) and was in the same bind you are now!  We ended up going through two full IVF cycles (my first was cancelled in the late stages of stims) so basically, my whole summer and fall was a no-go.  Instead I started checking out new classes at the gym.  I couldn't think of anything else to do and I agree, I still needed an "outlet" and if running/races wasn't going to be it, I needed to find something else.  Now that I am expecting twins, running remains off the table.  So for now, I do what I can do, and have already planned running Chicago 2014.  In fact, I have recruited my training team and will register as soon as I can.  It helps to just have it out there as a running destination.

I understand your "blahs" and totally get it.  My best suggestion is to find an alternative for now.  As my husband always reminds me "this is short term--you'll have the rest of your life for running."  Good luck!!!

  • Thank you! Thank you! It's so hard to feel this way becuase it makes you feel bad that you should be focused on the end goal of having that baby in your arms. But I am also trying to stay realistic that I don't know what the out come will be at the end of it all...

Congrats! and that is so awesome that you have Chicago 2014 in your sights Yes

  • I run, but would not consider myself a runner per se. I was finally up to a comfortable pace for a 5k, but I am (was) very into working out. I would go to the gym 3-4 days a week over my lunch hour plus weekend classes every week. When my DH and I went in for our IVF Start appointment with our RE she said that once I started stims I should cut back to just walking - DH heard that as "you should quit working out now". He is very protective of me and even more so with this whole process, so I haven't worked out in 4 weeks - plus I was out for 4 weeks in November because of my lap. Makes for long work days but I know it's all for the greater good!!

  • Thanks Dede! and my DH also got a little protective and told me to cut myself some slack when I was getting tired and feeling blah when I was on the estrace for my testing. So I know he will be once we get started.

We are doing DE and have to have all pre-testing done, which is almost done! and then we can move on to picking a donor. So it will take some time. I think this is why I am getting antsy! lol.

  • No advice, but I can commiserate with you.

I got really in to Bikram (hot) yoga this year and had to stop each time I had an IUI.  I took my last class at the beginning of December in anticipation of my IVF cycle.  It is really hard giving up something that gives you a healthy "high" and keeps you sane.

I know its not the same but DH and I walk ALOT at a trail near our house.  There are animals about which also keeps me happy.  Maybe you can find a nice trail or park to walk at?

  • I started running about 2 years ago.  I don't race but I do run on the treadmill several times a week.  I do hate that IVF kept me/keeps me from running.  I had thought I would be able to run all through my pregnancy, but once I started IVF I felt like I had to kiss that idea goodbye.  I was benched during stims, 2ww, pregnancy and then after my D&E and just started again 2 weeks ago.  It feels good to be at it again but I'll probably stop after my FET.

  • Honestly, giving up running has been the hardest part of this journey (so far) for me. That probably sounds crazy, but it really has taken a huge toll on me. My husband and I are both huge runners. We race 2 times a month. Even with my IUIs my RE didn't want me running. The last race I ran was a 10k turkey trot. I have put on weight.

Now that we are starting IVF I can run for the 4 weeks that I am on bcp so I am excited! I am going to try to fit some races in, even though it isn't race season yet. However, now I'm not in racing shape!

What makes it even harder is watching my DH train, race... We are even going to FL next month for him to run a marathon (causing me to be on bcp for an extra week).

    IF sucks. I feel you!

  • Thanks for posting this as I can relate to this and it is so frustrating not being able to run and exercise during a cycle.  Exercise is my stress reliever so without it I feel lost but hopefully sitting on the bench is for good reason and we get good news soon.  Best of luck to all of you!
