Leukocytes no nitrates?

Hi ladies
It seems that I have a frequent urination problem. I go sometimes up to 6x and hour. I took a uti test maybe 2 months ago and it came out positive for leukocytes but not nitrates so they said I was all set. Now I am having the same problem. Took an at home test that is blazing with leukocytes but no nitrates. I don't want to call the dr and get the same response but I can't imagine why I keep having all those white blood cells. Anyone else have a similar problem?

Re: Leukocytes no nitrates?

  • Yes!

In November I went to the hospital for cramping I was having. The doctor on duty did an NST and found that all of my vitals were fine, I wasn't having contractions, and the baby was doing great. He also took a urine sample and discovered that I had a slight UTI. I had no symptoms of a UTI except for that I was urinating more frequently (which I just assumed was normal because I know pregnant women urinate more frequently anyways). So, he put me on antibiotics for a week. Nothing really changed. I still urinated a lot.

A few weeks ago I had a check-up with my family doctor. I asked if she could check my urine because over the holidays I found that my urination increased (to the point where I felt like I had to go but couldn't...which IS a symptom of a UTI). She performed the test and I never heard back from her so I thought no news was good news.

Yesterday I went to the hospital again for intense pubic pain. The doctor on duty tested my urine and found that there were leukocytes present but no nitrates. He sent my urine to the lab to be tested further and gave me some antibiotics to use in the meantime. He says that it could be another UTI and he wants to rule it out. He also said this could be a sign of a bladder infection. He seemed pretty concerned about it. This is the third time I'll have been on antibiotics in just over a month (I was on some just before the holidays for an infection I had on my leg). I'm not pleased to be on antibiotics this much but I'll take what is necessary to get better.

I would definitely see the doctor again. I don't know much about this at all...but I do know that my doctor was concerned with the same result.

  • Have you tried going to a Urologist for confirmation?
That's their area of specialty. I'm saying this bc neither my PC nor my Gyn could help me well; my Gyn had a suspicion but the Urologist would be able to confirm with their equipment. Like Dr. Antonini in Round Rock, TX, who's spouse is an OBGyn in the same clinic.

And it turned out I had "IC" Interstitial Cystitis, which can cause white blood cells: leukocytes; but no nitrates in your urine.

The Urologist can also do more extensive testing from the inside of your bladder with a scope...same day procedure "if needed".

The biggest problem is making sure the doctor is "knowledgeable on IC", bc 'several' are not

Dr. Oz has discussed IC on his show and the audience was awed bc no one had heard of it. Like a foreign language.

But the disease is more common than people are aware of. But more people diagnosed with IC are speaking up and sharing relief symptoms with other sufferers.

I'm not saying you have IC, but elimination of the possibility is a good thing. Leukocytes with an absence of Nitrates is "very" common with an IC flare.

    Thx for reading.

    PS
There is no known cause or cure for IC. But it's more prevalent in women with children.
My youngest is 15...I've had issues since she was around 4 or 5.
    Just diagnosed in 2010.
Smh. A lot could have been avoided treated with knowledge. 'smiley face'
