2 1/2 yr old speech?

My question is this....how well does your 2.5 yr old speak?  I understand my son, but there are some things that I and others definitely cannot understand.  I have him in speech for exactly this reason.  Example - fish sounds like ***.......open sounds like oten.  just curious.  i know some children speak clear as a bell at 2.5 bnecause I have heard it and that is what made me put him into speech therapy.  then again, i know you cannot compare children.....some are further along.  again, just curious.

  • Mine speaks really well. I have noticed that as her vocabulary gets bigger it is a little harder because she knows more words than I expect. I would say I can understand 90 to 95 of what she says.

  • It really depends on the kiddo. My DD is very verbal and speaks very clearly and mostly in full sentences. She has always been very verbal even before she could actually talk (she would hold "conversations" with her babbling). that said there are certainly words that she doesn't pronounce correctly (for water she says "walloo" most of the time but will say it correctly if you correct her). Her little boyfriend who is just 4 days older than she is a little hard  to understand (for me his mom does much better obviously) and is doing 2-3 word sentences at most (which is normal at this age).

What does his speech therapist say about it? My H did residency (MD) with a guy that didn't speak at all until he was 3... Everyone thought there was something wrong with him. I guess they were all wrong since he became a doctor Smile

  • DD1 has always been very verbal and speaks really well.  She has a large vocabulary and strings 4-6 word sentences.  She still has times where I don't know what she is talking about (usually something she picked up at daycare) and it takes me a few minutes to figure it out.  She goes to daycare with a girl 6 months older and one 6 months younger and she speaks better than both of them, but I don't think they speak poorly.

  •  My nearly 3 year old doesn't speak too well.  It is one of my few concerns.  She was quite to begin with and I thought about getting her tested for EI but then she had a burst of words at 18 months.  Since then she has been developing sentences, but I can't always understand her.  Her daycare teacher said she seems a little behind, but thinks it may be because she's so shy.  I'm giving her a little more time before scheduling testing.  I was not a talker until 3.

  • Was your child a late talker? My son also has an articulation delay. At 2.5 he went from 20 words to 6 word sentences/500+ word vocab seemingly overnight so his articulation is still trying to catch up from it. His speech therapist said it's not uncommon in kids whose speech progresses like that.

Therapy has helped a lot. At 2.5 I was still translating most everything he said. He recently started preschool and the staff reports they are able to understand most of what he says and he's pretty good at compensating for it by choosing other words/directing them to what he wants if not.

  • When DD was 2 1/2 she was almost completely incomprehensible but for a few words.  I had her evaluated and she was diagnosed with an articulation disorder and started receiving therapy at 2 1/2.  Therapy has helped her tremendously.  It didn't seem like it at first.  However, now 6 months later I can understand much of what she says and she is doing better every day.

  • My DD spoke clearly at this age and well. Both DS's speak a lot, but not nearly as clear as DD at that age; DS#2 is almost 2.5. While my oldest got way better with age-he still has trouble with some spoken letter formation. Honestly, I never worried when I couldn't understand them all the time-they all talk so much.

When DS#1 is in Kindergarten I will recommend speech assistance for the few letters he is having trouble with--he is 4.5 and is reading and writing. His ability to form letters has never hindered him from reading, writing, or understanding.

I am not sure if comparing clarity at that age is a cause for alarm. For me the biggest concern I would have had at 2.5 is that they were not interacting, or trying to use words, or having trouble understanding commands (perhaps a hearing issue).

  • DS talks a ton and I understand probably 75-80% of what he says, strangers probably closer to half of what he says.  He does string words together into sentences.  In his room at school, the kids closer to 2 talk a lot, but are harder to understand; the ones that are closer to 3 speak very clearly in full sentences.

  • My almost 3 has suddenly gottem a lot better in the last couple of months. She strings long sentences together, and I understand 95% of what she is saying.

Before that she was pretty unclear.
