My question is this....how well does your 2.5 yr old speak? I understand my son, but there are some things that I and others definitely cannot understand. I have him in speech for exactly this reason. Example - fish sounds like ***.......open sounds like oten. just curious. i know some children speak clear as a bell at 2.5 bnecause I have heard it and that is what made me put him into speech therapy. then again, i know you cannot compare children.....some are further along. again, just curious.

It really depends on the kiddo. My DD is very verbal and speaks very clearly and mostly in full sentences. She has always been very verbal even before she could actually talk (she would hold "conversations" with her babbling). that said there are certainly words that she doesn't pronounce correctly (for water she says "walloo" most of the time but will say it correctly if you correct her). Her little boyfriend who is just 4 days older than she is a little hard to understand (for me his mom does much better obviously) and is doing 2-3 word sentences at most (which is normal at this age).
What does his speech therapist say about it? My H did residency (MD) with a guy that didn't speak at all until he was 3... Everyone thought there was something wrong with him. I guess they were all wrong since he became a doctor
my read shelf:
Was your child a late talker? My son also has an articulation delay. At 2.5 he went from 20 words to 6 word sentences/500+ word vocab seemingly overnight so his articulation is still trying to catch up from it. His speech therapist said it's not uncommon in kids whose speech progresses like that.
Therapy has helped a lot. At 2.5 I was still translating most everything he said. He recently started preschool and the staff reports they are able to understand most of what he says and he's pretty good at compensating for it by choosing other words/directing them to what he wants if not.
My DD spoke clearly at this age and well. Both DS's speak a lot, but not nearly as clear as DD at that age; DS#2 is almost 2.5. While my oldest got way better with age-he still has trouble with some spoken letter formation. Honestly, I never worried when I couldn't understand them all the time-they all talk so much.
When DS#1 is in Kindergarten I will recommend speech assistance for the few letters he is having trouble with--he is 4.5 and is reading and writing. His ability to form letters has never hindered him from reading, writing, or understanding.
I am not sure if comparing clarity at that age is a cause for alarm. For me the biggest concern I would have had at 2.5 is that they were not interacting, or trying to use words, or having trouble understanding commands (perhaps a hearing issue).
My almost 3 has suddenly gottem a lot better in the last couple of months. She strings long sentences together, and I understand 95% of what she is saying.
Before that she was pretty unclear.
