Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Solids confuse me..

Alright, so my 8mo DD is eating baby food regularly between formula feedings, no problems with that.. but what confuses me is the fact that I see other moms with babies my DD's age and theyre feeding them speghetti and other stuff along that line... Finger foods that baby can eat on their own. Not that Im saying I should be too or anything, but isnt that kind of stuff supposed to happen once theyre a year old??? lol.

When did you start feeding your baby real food? Just curious :)

  • Everyone is different. Some people start off with table food right away instead of purees. I would go by your peds advice and what you feel comfortable with. I only do purses and then while he's eating give him a few puffs or cherrios, but I know others who do all table food. My doctor said to start introducing finger foods at 6 months (Cheerios, toast, pancakes, etc).

  • We started table foods around 9 months. LO doesn't like her food pureed (unless it's a fruit puree!) and prefers to feed herself. My Pedi said at her 9 month appt when I told her there were foods I hadn't tried yet like tomato or onion etc.. and she said to go ahead.

  • Thanks! DD has been very interested when my husband and I are eating, so I was just curious. Definitely will ask her Dr. next time Im there! :)

  • I joke because my son is barely taking purees now and at his age my DD was definitely reaching for my spagetti and meatballs, it's true what they say.  Every child is different so follow their cues.  I'm not sure if it makes a difference but DD was also formula fed, my son has been breastfed, does it make a difference?  who knows.  But he's certainly slower with the solids then his big sis.  I'm scared to even let him try puffs :/

  • I give my 6 month old toast, soft rice, crock pot stew veggies small pieces that she has to gnaw on of apples pears. Steamed along with baby food.
My son hated still hates soft food, I'd say he's the only toddler I know who won't eat Mac cheese or anything like that! He started with ground beef it was a constant struggle,
My daughter likes both so I give her both. It's scary with the first child so just start with puffs :

Just this evening during dinner I was telling my husband that I don't think that DD likes purees.  She was yelling at me when I was feeding her and and then I gave up and gave her some puffs.  She quieted right up and fed herself.  We have tried spaghetti, some veggies, and other table foods and she just loves it!  Not sure how much goes she actually swallows but she def loves table food.  She does like the pureed fruit though.  Eats that right up.

  • Our doctor encouraged us to start introducing table foods at his 6 month appointment. He really got into them around 8 months. By then, he wad having eggs, meat, cheese, pasta, fruits and veggies. It is so much easier to just give him food off my plate, then to prepare him something different.

  • It's called BLW or BLS - baby led weaning or solids. We've been doing it since just before DS turned 6 months old and he's been handling it very well. He's particularly fond of steak and pork tenderloin! He eats whatever we're eating - I prepare things with him in mind and cut out added salt and/or sugar.

  • If you want your lo to be eating regular food by a year, then they need to learn to start eating that food now. At lo's 8 month appt today my dr suggested moving away from purees as much as I can to teach lo to eat.

I started to give lo a little bit of table food with every meal along with a puree or other jarred food.  So for ex: One recent dinner was a 4oz jar of a yogurt/barley/banana mix and then I gave him some cut up spankopita and potato.  Tonight I gave him some pieces of chicken, carrot, kale, and potato from homemade chicken soup. Then I followed up with 1/2 a jar of mango puree.  After i finish the baby cereal I have, I am going to use real oatmeal and other regular soft cereals.  Some other foods I give are pieces of avocado, cut of toast with ricotta, extra steamed broccoli, cottage cheese.

Theres quite a bit of gagging which from what I read is normal.  If I am home with my next baby, I will probably do baby led weaning.

Same here. It's so much simpler than trying to figure out how much pureed food to give, what order to introduce things, etc. Plus, I actually get to enjoy meal times with my baby.

Doing the same and I've loved it as well.

  • I'm also doing baby led weaning/solids. It is so simple...I love how low stress it is. Yesterday, I had spaghetti for dinner.  So did Bug.  Today, I had a quesadilla. So did Bug.  We really enjoy eating together.  She doesn't have solids every day, but when she does, she eats what I do...She's been eating solids 4 or 5 times a week for about three weeks, now...

  • We didn't start table food until DD started refusing pur?es at 9mo.

  • You're all so amazing, thank you for your input! Since DD is my first, I definitely feel confused when it comes to all this -- it gets overwhelming sometimes.
DD has been so interested in me whenever Im eating, it gets to a point where she comes over to me and tries open my mouth while Im chewing lol. I let her have a sip of my fruit smoothie today (it was all blended fruits with water, so I figured she was fine) and holy moly, she freaked out when I drank the rest of it and didnt give her the rest lol. So at this point all I can really say is shes ready to eat solids. Ill be getting her some puffs to try and other things like that.

Again, thank you all for your input, I forgot how much I loved this site and hearing from other Mommies.  :)
