Gag reflex

Anybody else have a gag reflex that is out of control? I used to never gag at anything. These last few weeks I gag while brushing my teeth, coughing, blowing my nose, or even just clearing my throat.

Re: Gag reflex

  • Yes! Brushing teeth is always where it gets me...and forget about trying to brush my tongue.

My dentist gave me one of those Reach brand flossers so at least I don't have to put my fingers in my mouth for flossing. That helps some.

What about when you're taking your prenatal? Putting the pill in my mouth sometimes makes me gag. So weird.

  • Me!  I am on the tail end of a cold and still have a lot of mucus that causes me to gag all the time.  I threw up four times this morning because of it.  It was not near this bad with my last pregnancy.

  • Oh, brushing the tongue isn't even a possibility. I can't even touch it with the toothbrush.
  • Mine is so bad that if I see something gross on TV like butchered meat, er stuff, stuff that normally wouldn't bother me, I gag. I can't do nasty deer, rabbit, dove, some other meat even in the kitchen.

  • Mine is definitely hyper-sensitive these days.  I definitely dry heave as a result of gagging just about every morning.  I still gag at night brushing my teeth too - but it's a little more subdued.  Coughing will sometimes set me off as well.  I'm definitely dreading the dentist a little bit next week.

Hopefully it calms down for all of us!

  • Holla. If I so much as try to brush  my back molars I have a bad time. Chewing gum makes it worse, and I can only make it to work without gagging in the car if I have a really strong mint or saltines or Life cereal or something. I don't know when it'll stop, but any time now is welcome.
  • Yep. I have gagged/almost vomited from cigarette smoke, the smell of varnish, frying chicken and dog food. I cannot brush my tongue but have had a gag reflex for that since before pregnancy.
  • Normally my gag reflex isn't horrible, but in my first trimester I could barely brush my teeth without gagging.  It's gotten better, thankfully, and is only really bad if I'm coughing hard.
