My husband and I recently completed all of our paperwork, profiles, etc. to adopt an infant domestically and we're officially a "waiting family" with our agency. We could be waiting up to 18 months...or it could happen much sooner. Who knows!? I've just started to wonder if we need to contact a pediatrician soon. How early should I look into that?
Re: Choosing a pediatrician?
I would contact a couple of offices and choose one. I asked friends and family if they would recommend their pediatricians. Then I called them and found out if they took our insurance, what their hours were, how many doctors were in the practices, etc. I know some people will actually go in and meet with the doctors, but I didn't. I was happy with the information I received when I called the one office and had very good feedback from family/friends about it.
You will need to have a doctor when a baby is placed with you. I know they asked for that information at the hospital before our daughter could be released to us.
I would start looking now. We didn't and then we found there was a huge need to consult a physician about different drugs BMs were taking as we reviewed profiles. If you are with an agency who asks you to review BM profiles and then decide to be shown, as opposed to those agencies which just show your profile if they find a good BM match, then I would go ahead and find a pede doc.
We've finally found one and she actually is really good about helping us decipher the info on drugs BMs are taking and the long term effects they have on children.
