How long are LO's sleeping?

Just wondering how long your LO's are sleeping? Mine is 5 weeks old and usually only sleeping 2-3 hours before waking. What am I doing wrong? I see where some are sleeping 5-7 hour stretchs? I've tried later bedtimes, earlier bedtime, dream feed, rice in the bottle, nothing is working. DD was STTN at 6 weeks from about 11-7. Needing advice and sleep!

Re: How long are LO's sleeping?

  • My LO is 5 weeks and usually sleeps in 3-4 hour stretches but I have gotten a few 5 hour stretches.

Some of the 5 hour stretches included LO being awake for about 4 hours prior to bed time. Another time while we were bed sharing we had a 6 hr stretch.

I hope you get your 5-6 hour stretch soon! Although you might feel like no amount of sleep will repair what you've lost! haha GL!

  • Ha! Sleep! I have vague recollections of that.

Like an hour, tops. Although occasionally he treats me and I get TWO hours! Lol. 3 week growth spurt, hooray!

  • Hehe, we are getting some stretches that are around 5 hours however is not consistantly occuring, she MUST be in our arms for that to happen and she must be fairly soundly asleep before her intestines start gurgling for that kind of a duraton.

If we try putting her down, she wakes up within 10 minutes.

  • I would just say that all babies are different. I don't think there is much you can do at this age other than keep trying. The only reason Amelie sleeps so well is because she sleeps with me in bed and is breastfed, so neither of us really have to wake all the way up to eat.

  • I agree that babies are different. During the third week, DD was sleeping 5 hour stretches at night and then would wake up for a bit to eat and then go back to sleep for 3 hours, but then she wouldn't sleep much during the day except for maybe an half hour or hour at a time. I was thrilled because I was so rested.

Now she sleeps for short periods of time at night or during the day where I can get no rest. There are many times where she falls asleep in my arms and then I go to put her in her bassinet and she wakes up within a few minutes. It is very trying some days.

I never know what each day is going to bring, so I try to handle it as best as I can and know that with her constantly changing and growing, it's a little much to expect a schedule.

  • I'm using the Rock and Play combined w/swaddle at night. Trying to keep daytime & nighttime different.  I've gotten a few nights where she'll sleep for close to 4 hours. Mostly, it's 3.5 hour one & then she'll nurse, be up for close to an hour and then sleep for 2.5. During the day she'll nap in the swing, bouncer, car seat or on us for1/2 -2 hours.

  • We usually get 3-4 hrs a stretch at night, and naps vary anywhere from 10min-3hrs. We have had a few 5 hrs stretches at night, but I haven't been able to figure out the secret to getting her to sleep that long consistently.

Every child is different.  Personally I'd stop trying to do different things and just follow your baby.  There's a reason they are waking up.  They're just a baby.

And if your pediatrician didn't tell you to put rice in the bottle for reflux issues, sorry but I'm judging.  Are you going to try whiskey next?

DD is 4 weeks and this is almost exactly our current situation.

We do the same rock n play/swaddle thing at night. Do you use a regular blanket or one of those halo swaddle sac things? That's what we use and lately we've noticed lo sliding down a bit at night and the swaddler slides up, covering a bit of his face. Does this happen to you? Lucky he let us know when it happened and we fixed it, but I'm still worried... To answer the original post: we're going to be 4 weeks tomorrow and he sleeps about 2 to 3 hours between each feeding, day or night. The most we ever got between a feeding was 4.5 hours at night... it was wonderful! But just a one time fluke, sadly.

We use the swaddle me w/velcro.It's like a baby straitjacket!

  • Ours is pretty consistently sleeping 5 to 6 hours at night. During the day though, hour tops and it has to be on me.

We're doing a mix of BF and FF and have discovered that formula keeps her content longer. We have been giving her a formula bottle at her last feeding and it seems to help. And before we're flamed for using formula to get more sleep, our pedi told us that we needed to supplement.
