Slacker boob

I'm going to xp this on the bf board but since I love you ladies so much I wanted to see if any one had some insight.

My right boob has always been a slacker an left has been great but lately I've been worried about my supply. LO won't take a bottle so I'm terrified if my supply goes she won't eat.
LO doesn't eat as well on my right side and when she does she will usually also eat on the left. Normally she only eats on one boob per feeding.
When I pump I am use to getting less from the right but it's getting worse. This morning I pumped and got 3.5 oz from good boob and only .25 from slacker boob. That's a huge difference!

What can I do to increase my supply but not cause an over supply on the good side? Do I just pump a few times a day on the slacker side? Should I be taking any supplements? I drink a ton of water and eat well [lo is mspi].
Thanks!

Re: Slacker boob

  • Honestly, I think it's normal to have one side "work" better than the other.  This has been true for me while BFing each of my 3 LOs.  With DD, my right side was the slacker.  With DS1 my left side was less productive.  With DS2 it seems to vary month to month.

It seems to correlate with which side LO is preferring during feedings.  I just try to keep offering the lazy side a bit more often.  If you overpump/overstimulate the lazy breast, then that could lead to issues with engorgement or eventually oversupply.

  • I definitely have a slacker. My right usually makes half what my left makes. Though I ep, I just make due I still pump the usual 15/20 mins. Boobs are supply and demand.

  • On a crazy day I will have a 3 oz difference in boobs.  I hate it, but its normal.  I just try to keep the pump on the right for about 5 minutes longer, even if nothing is coming out.  Just so it can feel that there is a need for more.  Sometimes it works.  My problem is that I only pump at work, so after the weekend, I have to start all over again trying to even it out.  Its not a huge deal to me as long as I get the desired amount at the end of the day.  Also, I try and put LO on the slacker boob first.  (I've been feeding from both sides now since he's eating more.)

  • i have the same problem. except i dont pump at all so i dont know how lazy the right boob is. DD has always preferred the left and if i give her the right she sucks for a few seconds and screams until i give her lefty.i try to alternate but its hard. i just deal with it. sorry i have no advice other than the calcium, mag and zinc supplement.

  • Thanks ladies! It makes me feel better to know thats totally normal. I was just terrified that she wasnt getting enough or my right side would just stop and since she wont take a bottle I cant supplement. I guess as long as shes gaining and has enough wet and dirty diapers shes ok then?

  • I read on the medela facebook that this girl only produced on one side, but it was enough to make up for it.  :)  our bodies are amazing.
