Sleep problems

My son just turned 2 years old.  He dropped his morning nap about 2 month ago.  Now all of a sudden he is waking up in the middle of the night to play.  He wakes up at 5:30am.  He goes to sleep at12:00 or 12:30 then he sleeps for 2-3 hours.  He goes to be at 8:00pm.  Then around 2:00 in the morning he has been waking up and wanting to play, talk and be silly for like 2 hours.  Then he goes back to sleep.  He isn't waking up to eat.  Sometimes he wakes up because his diaper leaked other times, I can't figure out why he woke up.  He can't go without a nap in the day, if he does, he is ready to go to bed super early.  I was thinking he might should go to bed later, but I don't know ... what to you think?

Re: Sleep problems

  • My daughter is 2 and typically goes to bed between 8-8:30 and wakes around 7-7:30. She naps approximately 12:30-2:30 but some days goes without a nap. Maybe cut his naptime down

  • My FI's DD has similar issues, except she will lay in bed at bed-time and be awake very late before she falls asleep. It's not as much of a problem on days she doesn't get a nap, but if she naps late, or naps for too long, she will sometimes be up til almost 11 p.m. before falling asleep (and I put the girls to bed between 8-9).

  • DD wakes up around 6-6:15pm (occasionally sleeps in until 7 which is the best!), naps 1:30-3/3:30, and goes to sleep at 7:30pm.  About every couple months, she goes through a phase where she will wake for various reasons (wet diaper, bad dream, wants to play, etc.) 1-3 times per night.  We initially thought she needed a shorter nap, but it seems to be related to her going through a phase.

Most recently, we think she was waking up due to potty training (her mind processing this big change).  We went about a week with her waking up many times during the night or early.  We finally stopped going in every single time, and now for the last 2 nights she's back to sleeping through the night.  I would suggest letting your LO just be (as long as he isn't really upset- I could never handle the CIO) and hope that he'll go back to sleep on his own or realize it's not time to get up.  Hope that helps.
