Getting frustrated and discouraged

I know I"ve said this before but reading what your babies are eating I'm getting more discouraged and defeated.

DD used to be an awesome eater. Not so much. I get the decrease in appetite and tha'ts totally fine. But she's getting more and more picky and I dont know how to handle it anymore.

The only stuff DD will eat is meat and ONLY meat with maybe some cheese and bread. She;ll eat some noodles. She'lle at bananas, apples, grapes and cuties. THATS IT! I give her Plum, organic baby food for veggies. Otherwise she won't touch them.

I tried offering just veggies first but forget it, she just screams and wants meat... Maybe i'm over thinking this too much and worry too much but I don't know how to go about this anymore. It's just such a shocker since she used to eat everything. :(

I guess I just needed to vent.

  • I'm sorry you're having a rough time with food. You may have heard it before, but try not to stress too much about it. You choose what goes on the plate, but it's up to LO how much of it they eat. They will eventually give other foods a try if you keep offering them. Best I can suggest is maybe have a meal a day with just fruits and veggies. You'll probably get some screaming, but eventually they will get curious and hungry enough to give it a try. I'm not an expert on the subject though. You can always call a baby nutritionist for advice if you're that worried about it. They often dispense free advice if you need it.

  • The only way DD take veggies is if they are pureed.  Keep offering them on her plate, but at least she is getting them when you offer her the Plum Organics.  Expensive I know, but this is just a phase.

this. keep at it. and lead by example - make sure she's seeing you eat lots of green things.

in some ways it's kind of nice when they get old enough to bribe... i mean... what? I didn't say that! Embarrassed

  • Thanks ladies!

At the end of the day she does get a good variety of foods but I just wish I could get away from the expensive formula and organic ready to eat foods.

  • My DD refuses to self feed, so this may not work for you.... Sometimes I sneak less liked foods into the same bite of something she loves.  She often ends up with weird combos of blueberry yogurt with cooked carrots, but it works for us (sometimes).

II have tried that and it works only saldom and for a few bites. But better than nothing :)

She tried cottage cheese and spit it out a few times, but it was obvious that it was due to texture and not taste. The taste she absolutely loves. I offered it again for dinner and she really ate it! Veggies she just doesn't seem to like. Definitely has that from her father :P

  • I totally hear where you are coming from. I posted a while back about DD only eating bread and cheese. I'm willing to bet that your DD is just going through a phase. My DD ate all kinds of stuff for months, then all of a sudden would only eat bread and cheese. That lasted maybe 6 weeks and now she is suddenly eating all kinds of "normal" foods. Just keep offering the other things that you want her to eat and she will probably eventually come around about some of them.

  • So funny you posted this I made the same type of post on the December board. He is basically eating grilled cheese, some veggies and applesauce that's about it. He could eat puffs, yogurt melts and graham crackers all day. I'm hoping this is a phase like the PP said. I guess I'll just keep offering different foods. Is your LO still on formula/BF? DS is still getting 2 bottles a day one in the morning and one at night that's 14 oz. total so don't know if that is too much too.

  • Yeah just keep offering, it'll happen. Or you'll find a way of preparing it that works - I could not get DS to eat broccoli at all... till one night I made chicken broc alfredo and whala. He still won't eat it any other way, but it works. And its weird b/c he flat out will not eat green beans at home, but chows on them at daycare!? Kids are strange, but they get what they need. Hope the phase passes soon.

Also have you tried making any of your own purees to save $? If you have a blender or food processer its really easy.... freeze it in ice cube trays for ease of use. I sort of miss him eating purees in some ways because it was so easy to just pop some cubes out of the fridge on nights we ate something he couldn't.

Oh yeah, DD is still on formula and she still gets about 20oz/day. That's about 5 bottles a day! Per our pedi thats still what she's supposed to be getting. I"m sure it will now change slowly. But now i'm adding an Oz of cow's milk to it. I have to sneak it in there as she doesn't like just cow's milk so it's a transition period for now, but am hoping I'm on my second to last tub of formula.

And yes, my DD will eat baby junk food (as I call it). So those baby melts, baby cheetosl, puffs etc. No problem there LOL

  • My little girl is starting to get a little picky so I understand the frustration - my only thoughts come from my pedi - she said that it takes a kid like 12 or so times of trying something before a kid really decides if they like or don't like food and once they decide, know that their taste buds can change the more they try stuff... so maybe just keep offereing and hope your little one might change their tastes (which does happen)?
