Separation Anxiety at School

My DS has been in school since September.  He turned 3 at the end of December and is the youngest in his class.  Prior to starting school, he was only cared for by me, DH and our parents.  There was some separation anxiety at the beginning of school (which I completely expected), but then it got much better.  He was excited to go to school and shared all the fun things he did when he got home.

Thanksgiving weekend, we attempted a three day potty training intensive, which was a complete failure.  We decided to wait for a while until he was ready.  Since then, my DS has been miserable about going to school.  He doesn't want to get out of the car, tells me that he doesn't want to have fun and barely talks about his day.  The teachers tell me that as soon as he gets into school, he is fine (no tears, etc) and does great.

When I try to ask what is bothering him, he changes the subject.  I try to ask about specific issues, but I'm afraid to plant something that isn't really there.  I just don't know what to do.  Any ideas?  Should I just stay the course and wait for this phase to pass?  TIA!
