PSA: how we painlessly beat paci in 3 days

Ya'll. It was so NBD. I was prepared for awful.

To start, look at my sig and judge me for waiting this long. I now realize how much more attached to it I was than she.

I didn't want to do the "cut the tip" -that's what she said- trick because I wasn't sure if it was safe for the type of paci she has. I don't recall where I found this suggestion on Google, but all it involved was telling her that it was going away in 3 days.

Day 1:  Twice in a day, and never mentioned otherwise, I told DD that we were going to give paci to a baby in 3 days and that it was going to keep her teeth from being nice and strong and until then she could only have it in the bed when going to sleep (this cut out the usual car trips usage). I said when she gave it to the baby, I would take her to the toy store to pick something out and then I asked for it and she handed it over.

Day 2: Same as day one, told her tomorrow was the last night with paci before we gave it to the baby. She asked about it less. I gave it to her only in the bed.

Day 3: Told her it was the last day with paci. She didn't mention it other than when she got in the bed.

Day 4: She asked about it once in the car and I reminded her it was gone. I took her to the store to look at toys and pick out a book and reminded her that it was because she was a big girl and gave paci to the baby. She fell asleep in the car without it at nap time and took a normal nap.

That night, usual routine for bedtime without it and she hasn't mentioned it since. Ditto the next night.

Me, after she went down again last night without it:

  • OMG, that is so encouraging to me. I am so scared to mess up my awesome night sleeper that I keep pushing it back.

  • This give me hope. I had pretty much come to terms with the fact that DD would go to college with her paci.

  • That's great! I've been wanting to get rid of it for a little while now but I'm scared. This gives me hope. Plus, ILs babysat overnight on Saturday and couldn't find the paci, so she didn't have it that night and survived.
