Night light - afraid of the dark

DD has suddenly become terrified of the dark at night.  We used to be fine with one night light and the door closed.  Now we have 2 night lights and will leave the door open with hall light on until she falls asleep but then she will wake up terrified in the middle of the night.

She is such a light sleeper I don't want to keep the door open all night or the hall light on but the 2 night lights in her room clearly isn't enough.   tonight we left a lamp on with 40 watt bulb in but that makes me very uncomfortable and don't want to do that on a regular basis, but we are desperate.  Any suggestions for something that is brighter than a standard night light but not as bright as leaving the light on??

Re: Night light - afraid of the dark

  • DD1 has just started being afraid of the dark in the last 2 weeks.  She has always had a night light, but she has been asking me to leave the door open and the hall light on.  The last 2 days she has wanted more light than that.  She has a dimmer light on her ceiling fan, so we've been able to leave that in low and then turn it off when we go to bed.

  • My son has horrible night time issues. He even when through a phase where he couldn't sleep unless every light in the room was on. Our bedroom looked like the Vegas strip.

I second the flash light or even a cool toy that lights up. It really helped him out. For his night light I use my Scentsy warmer. It has a 25w bulb, so it's brighter then a normal night light, but still dim enough to sleep comfortable.

  • What about one of the Homedics sleep/sound machines? I use it in DS's nursery and it's bright enough for me to see him and change diapers, but not quite as bright as a lamp would be. I think they are like $20 at Target? And they plug in so you don't have to worry about batteries. There is also a dimmer that you can use to make the projector as bright/dim as you'd like.

  • Thanks everybody!  We tried the Cloud B Twilight ladybug thing and that seemed to help a bit last night.  I totally forgot about that!  I turned in Huggies points a while back to get that and never really used it.  I only had to go in there once.  She woke up several other times but I am assuming she turned the lady bug on and went back to sleep as I didn't have to go back in there.  I am heading to Target today to try to find some brighter night lights.  Any little bit helps, right??
