Babies: 3 - 6 Months

refusing bottle after burping

We have struggled so much with feedings since my LO was born he is 4mo. now. He is formula fed and we use Dr. Brown's bottles and Gerber gentle formula. After he burps mid feeding he often refuses the bottle after that. We offer him 6oz. Bottles but really struggle with that last 3oz. He eats every 3 to 3.5 hours. I just feel like at 4mo. 3oz. is not enough. Anyone else have this issue? His Dr. said he is gaining wt. well and wasn't worried. Is my LO just a snacker?

Re: refusing bottle after burping

  • I'd say let him eat as much or as little as he wants.  My LO is almost 7 months and rarely finishes a 6oz bottle.  Her limit is usually 5 oz.  As long as he is continuing to gain weight and having enough wet diapers I wouldnt be too worried about it.  How much does LO weigh?  General rule of thumb is 2 - 2.5 oz per pound per day.

  • My 5 month old is still only taking about 4 ounces and sometimes (but rarely) 5 ounces. She has never been a big eater and her growth charts look really good, so her pedi us not worried. Also, since she was newborn, if we stopped and burped her mid-feeding, she wouldn't take the bottle back either. So we don't stop in the middle unless she looks uncomfortable.

  • Thank you for your responses. He was 16lb 10oz. at his 4month appt. He was a big baby at birth 9lb 10oz. My DS1 was such a big eater so I don't know what is normal.
