Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Totally random question. Burping.

I was at BILs house where I just finished BF DD and was burping her and he said "you still have to do that, she can't burp on her own yet?" I know that DD is capable of burping on her own, sometimes she does it right away after she unlatches. I didn't really know how to respond other than "well she can burp on her own but I just do it anyway".

I know it doesn't really matter, but are you still burping your LOs? Does it matter if you do or not, like are they more fussy if you don't. I feel like I do it more out of habit. Is there an age attached to when this becomes unnecessary?

Re: Totally random question. Burping.

  • I still do it because she usually eats shortly before going to sleep and will sometimes spit up if she doesn't get a burp out before lying down.

  • I dont any more. Not sure when i stopped either (mabye 5-6 months)

He was never a big burper anyways. and there is nothing wrong with you do it cause you want to

  • I still do just out of habit I guess. DS is capable of burping on his own as well. But I figure I'll just help it out a bit. I only do it for a few minutes and if he doesn't then I just leave him.
  • I haven't burped DS in a long time. Probably not since 3 or 4 months. He's not fussy or gassy at all.

MIL sometimes asks if she can burp DS after he nurses. I have no problem with her trying, but he doesn't usually burp for her anymore.

  • A friend of mine has a DS who is about 14 months older than mine. When we ate lunch with them a few weeks ago, I was caught off-guard when her LO burped at the table. It hadn't dawned on me that one fabulous day I wouldn't have to burp DS. I still burp him now so that I can have the burp cloth ready when he inevitably spits-up.

  • We stopped in the last week because it was just annoying DS. Now I just sit him upright when he unlatches and he usually burps on his own within 10 seconds or so.

  • We stop doing it to DD when she started doing it herself soon after eating. With DS, we continued to do it until he was eating mostly solids. HE spit up a lot and did so less as long as we burped him.

  • My BIL says similar stuff... just a clueless male comment. I would simply state, LO is a baby... yes dd still needs burping.
