Hi ladies,
Background: I'm 32, this is my first pregnancy. I've been active pretty much my whole life...there was a little bit of time when I was a bit lazy around 24-25 but I snapped back. I've done two tri a tri races, a number of shorter running races, did the Tough Mudder last year and generally exercise 5-6 days per week (running, biking, swimming, Insanity, P90X etc).
In training for the Tough Mudder, which is the longest race I've ever run, I increased my distance and speed a lot last summer with run training 2-3 times per week.
Since becoming pg, I've kept up doing an 8-9km run every Saturday in addition to other exercise 1-2 times per week. However, around 10 weeks I started to feel muscle strain in my inner thigh and groin area. I can feel it come on around 30mins into the run and it makes me super sore for about a day after the run.
I'm now almost 15 weeks and today's run, the pain is starting to creep right into the front of my pubic bone, in addition to my hip adductor/groin.
Sorry for the long post but I did research and everything I found people started to maybe get a little pain around 23++ weeks. Has anyone else gotten this pain? How early? Is there anything I can do about it? I'll ask my dr when I see her in two weeks.
This is a total bummer
Re: Running while pg: groin pain at 10 weeks normal?
I know it's a total bummer, but IMO, any pain is a message from your body to pull back. (Not always, but during pregnancy) I'd take a little break (or tone down what you're doing) until you can speak with your doctor.
I'd just be afraid of injuring yourself. With the stretching and loosening of ligaments during pregnancy, you're more prone to injuries.
I ran my entire pregnancy without pain, but I had friends that didn't make it as long. And I was very cognizant of how my body felt. If I'd have had consistent pain, like it sounds like you're having, I would have stopped too.
The relaxin in your body could be causing some SI joint pain - I'm not a doctor, just a guess
If it's any consolation, my joints were really loose feeling in the first trimester but it's gotten better since then! At 22 weeks, my SI joint was causing issues when running. I cut back on running mileage that week and started wearing a maternity support belt for future runs - that helped a TON!
Now I'm 28 weeks and still running just fine. I make sure to wear my support belt now and that's prevented any severe hip pain. Also, if you're hip continues to cause issues, doing yoga once or twice a week has worked wonders for me!
Listen to your body and talk to your doctor, but know things may get better as your pregnancy continues!
