Not taking enough BM due to solids?

My guy was a slow starter with solids and had no interest until two weeks ago. Since then, it's all he wants. He used to take 31 ounces of breast milk a day I pump But now each day he takes less and less. It's 3:30 PM where I'm at and he's taken 5 ounces. Before, that was just his wake up bottle.

Normally he would be close to 20 to 25 ounces by now. He just refuses the bottle But if I try to hand him some food or put a spoon near his face his mouth is wide open.

Is this normal? Has anyone had this happen and then it just remedied itself? I try not to over worry about things but this is a pretty dramatic decrease over about a week.

  • We are going through this too. I am so worried over it. We started solids a couple weeks ago and now DD is only drinking 20 to 25 oz of formula per day. She has never had a lot of formula per day... the best days were 27-29 per day but our Dr also mentioned she should be eating more!

  • Hmm, that does seem odd that he's refusing the bottles... But I've heard that babies go on nursing strikes sometimes, maybe that applies to bottle strikes too? I mean, I think the best you can do is just keep offering the bottle first every time, and maybe he'll come back to it after a few days.

And if it keeps going on you can always schedule a weight check at the dr.'s. Try not to worry too much!

  • my pedi said a decrease in milk consumption when taking solids is normal.

Id say DD  is down about 20%

This. We just went through the same thing this past week and just starting to turn a corner. DS would not take any bottles last week! At daycare he would only take in 2 or 3 oz so they had mix extra milk with his solids. When we got home in the evenings he still wouldn't take his bottles! This lasted about a week with the worse lasting 3 days. Just last night he started to take the bottle like his usual self again. We started solids a month ago.
  • DD had a bottle strike last week also. She nursed great and loves her two solid meals a day, but when I was at work she refused the bottle competely one day and only ate 3-4oz. for 2 other days. the fourth day she finally turned the corner back to her regular 9-12oz. I wasn't sure if the decrease had to do with her eating more solids or the fact that she got her flu shot booster the day before the strike started, sounds like it is pretty common occurrence though.
