Help! Back pain and nerve damage after birth - anyone else?

Hi! Since I gave birth on October 26th (induced, vaginal w/ epidural), I have been experiencing a lot of burning back pain and extreme muscle weakness/heaviness in my arms and legs, with tingling/numbness/burning in the hands, feet, and face. My first thought was that it had to do with the epidural, but my MRI came back ok and my doctors tell me that it would only affect my legs if that were the case. I've seen a couple of doctors, who can't seem to figure it out, and tell me nerve problems are notoriously difficult to diagnose.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar or know of anyone who has?  Help!

Thanks!

  • I had some issues after birth. The MRI showed nothing but a nerve conduction study revealed evidence of radiculapathy and spinal stinosis from the lumbar. My doctor thinks it was caused by the combinatiin of weight gain and pressure from thebaby while giving birth. He also says the MRI will not always catch it. i'm in physical therapy and things have been much better.

  • Have you thought about going to a chiropractor?

  • I had lots of tingling in my arms after ds was born from carrying him and standing differently. I got some exercises to do from therapy and felt much better.

  • My right side is a mess!  I take an Aleve every 12 hours, which seems to help but when I am awake I have a pain in my hip to knee and sometimes in my back.  DH and I just talked about me going to a chiropractor to see if that will help.   I had sciatica problems when I was pregnant but that was on the left side... hopefully a back adjustment will help.

I would contact your doctor to see if they can recommend anything.

  • I agree with PP you need to see an ortho that specializes in backs that can order whats called an EMG nerve conduction study to see where your problem is. The ortho I worked for didnt do back but he sent plenty of people to the back doc for some of the same reasons. I personally love my chiropractor so you could start there first but without knowing for sure if you have nerve damage, you could be doing more harm than good.
