Anyone else wake up gasping for air?

Last night was the first time this has happened to me and it happened 3 times. I was laying on my side too, not my back. I am going to mention it to the OB when I see him Tues if it happens again. Is this normal? I just worry about the babies getting enough oxygen when this happens.

  • I have no advice or insight, but I just wanted to say I hope it was a fluke and something that doesn't happen again. I think I would mention it on Tuesday to the OB whether it happens again or not.

  • I would definitely mention it to your OB.  It hasn't happened to me.  I hope everything is okay and it doesn't happen again!

  • I have before.  One of my twins was shoved under my rib cage.  So a good movement from him caused me to gasp for air.

  • Yes, so weird! It happened a handful of times. Definitely enough to freak me out. I never mentioned it to my doctors, but I assume it was ok. FWIW, it hasn't happened since the boys were born. Hope that was the last time it happens to you! So scary.

  • OK, so I'm no where near as far along (and therefore experienced!) as you are, but my first guess was, were you laying on your right or left side?  The inferior vena cava (I'm pretty sure that's it) runs down your back along your spine and then goes to your right side near your pelvis, so you can get that compression "panic" feeling on your back, but also on your right side.  I do, depending on what position the girls are in.

  • This has happened to me as well. It went of for a week or so then didn't happen again. It must have been due to the position of the babies. I never mentioned it to my OB but now that I think about I might should have. I hope it stops for you. It's super scary when you wake up, I hated the feeling!

  • It happens to me all. the. time.  Its when our little girl shoves her butt waaay up into my ribcage and squishes my diaphram- we actually caught her doing it on an ultrasound.  Mention it to your doc but I suspect it just has to do with one of the boy's positions.  Switching sides, or sitting/standing up sometimes helps to get her to move.

  • It happened to me a couple of times too.... I coughed it up to the babies and the pressure on my lungs.  If there's a pattern, I would check with the dr.

  • Thanks girls. It didn't happen last night. I am thinking it is the positioning of one of them. I will still mention it to the OB.

It happened to me all the time in mid-late pregnancy. I never mentioned it to my doctor and chalked it up to pregnancy apnea. It was the worst feeling!!
