When to take him in...

DS has had the runny nose/cough for a week and a half now.  It's not really making any progress.  Clear nose, but the cough seems like it's getting a little worse.  However, with all the gross flu stuff out there (and he HAS had the flu shot) I'm more nervous about him catching something worse waiting in the doctor's office.  Thoughts?  I wish there was something I could give him...

Re: When to take him in...

  • Call the doctors office and expalin his symptoms to a nurse practioner.  She/He will tell you if the symptoms are bad enough to bring him in or if you should just wait it out.

  • If there is no fever and the cough isn't causing him any breathing problems, there is probably no reason to go in. Calling the nurse is a good idea, but that is what I would guess they would tell you. It is probably best to stay away from the other sick people, like you said.

Ditto. DS has a runny nose and cough pretty much at all times in the winter. I would only worry if there was a fever or something was disrupting his breathing, etc.

  • Have you tried using Vicks at night? Also our pedi recommended Zarbee's brand cough syrup. It's honey based and natural so it's safe for LOs. He has also OKd Mucinex, so you may want to ask the nurse if that is safe to help get up some of the gunk and make his cough more productive.

  • DS had the same stuff. I took him into the Dr for his 2 yr appt. Turns out he had an ear infection. But the night before his appt he had a low grade fever.

  • Sorry to hear your lil guy isn't feelin good!

If I were you I would call the dr office and explain the symptoms to a nurse. They should be able to help a lil with deciding if he needs to be seen or not.

My DS has been sick since Christmas Eve. It started out with a cough and runny/stuffy nose. No fever.. Then within 2 days he started havin a low grade fever. Took him to the dr. They did swabs for strep, flu, & rsv. all came back negative.. finally after the new year holiday break i got him back into the dr as his cough was getting worse and we found out He had an ear infection in the left ear and bronchitis. After a week of prednisone and azithromycin he still wasn't better. Got him in again and he then had ear infection in his right ear and still has a cough.. He now has to be on another antibiotic and have nebulizer treatments 3 times a day for a week and then once a day for the rest of the month.

we are also using hylands cough and cold and baby Vicks. We have a cool mist humidifier that has a Vicks pad slot and have been using it nightly and at naps..

hope your lil one is feelin better soon! Having a sick baby is no fun!

  • You just have to go by the cough and symptoms. Our LO had a cough for several days that never got better with cough or cold medicine and seemed to get more consistent. We were coughing all day not just at night. Then we started with a runny nose and low grade fever so took him in. SO glad we did because it was RSV. Dr. could hear the wheeze starting and his breathing was real rapid. His fever hit 102. Today we've been fever free but been doing breathing txs regularly. Cough is less often but sounds worse so we're just keeping an eye on him. Just know that stuff is going around and you don't want to wait to long and it settle into bronchitis, RSV, or pneumonia.
