How are you picking your diaper bag color?

I've decided on my diaper bag upgrade but am stuck on picking a pattern... so I'm curious as to what you ladies are going off of...

Boy or girl appropriate? Just something you love? Something masculine enough for SO to carry too?

I mean do you have to have a boy/girl appropriate diaper bag? I guess that's my major dilemma. For M, I currently have the Vera Bradley Baby Bowler Bag in the black microfiber. I specifically chose a nice black so DH wouldn't feel uncomfortable carrying it, plus I love a nice classic black anyway so it was NBD for me. Well turns out he doesn't like carrying it anyway because it looks more like a purse then a baby bag... but I'm not into the whole super diaper bag looking diaper bags. Anyway, I'm going to get a Ju-Ju-Be BFF bag this time and am really liking the Blush Frosting pattern... but I'm worried if we have a boy it would be really weird... but then again we would have a boy and a girl (if this baby is even a boy). Should I go with something gender neutral, or just go with what I really like, or should I wait until after baby is born so if it is a girl I won't have any qualms about getting the pink bag?

 ETA: But I'm a big planner and a freak when it comes to being prepared (I think I had M's bag completely packed at 7 months and re-organized it constantly until she was born)... so scratch the option of waiting until after baby comes, that isn't the best idea for me haha.

Just go with something you really like. It doesn't really matter if it matches the gender stereotype of your child.

That said, I plan on getting a Vera Bradley diaper bag, and I might tailor the color to the gender stereotype of the sex of the baby. It honestly depends on what I fall in love with, though.  

 ETA: I was just looking at the bags again, and I LOVE the Symphony in Hue Pattern. It's pretty neutral, actually. It's on sale too! Score!

I really wanted a kalencom Cotten coated one, and zulily had a deal on them, so I showed DH the patterns I liked and he chose one he could live with.

I bought something h and I could both use. A black skip hop messenger bag. Seems silly to me to buy something he doesn't want to carry too. With dd he used it as much as I did. Then at 1 yr I bought one of those quick change things and ditched the full size bag completely.

We have a lot of diaper bags and I end up switching them out depending on my mood. At first we had two bags packed (one for me that I took everywhere and one for DH that he took on small trips - his contained only a diaper, wipes and a change of clothes)
Currently I am using a bag from Thirty One for my potty-trained DS but we carry lots of "stuff" with us so its not too bad. It is VERY feminine though. I choose my bags depending on MY mood and what I love, because lets face it the baby isn't really going to carry it, and they aren't going to care a lot if its pink or blue.

Mine has a black and white plaid pattern on it (it's a 31 bag). It also has an E for our last name in hot pink. I figured DH can turn it to the other side if doesn't like the hot pink

I went with what I like which is something that looks like a purse and doesn't scream baby. I got a kate spade black diaper bag. Love it, its a purse with extra pockets and compartments and a changing pad.

My sister had a baby in September and she is a big Coach fan, so I got her a coach tote for her diaper bag. It is a plain black tote that she will be able to use in the future as a weekend bag. I am looking at a Louis Vutton bag myself for the same reason. Also my other half said no more expensive purses he didn't say anything about diaper bags. LOL

I went with an orange bag as it is DH's favorite color. We also have an orange stroller.

DH works the school calendar and is home with our kids during the summer so I wanted stuff he would be happy to use and gender neutral.

I have yet to meet anyone else with a bag this color so it is super easy to find if you set it down near other bags.

I used to have a Coach problem when I worked in retail and got really good discounts.  I still carry a Coach handbag, but it's fairly old.  We are planning on minimal baby stuff (due to current space restrictions) and trying to be thrifty, but if I could have one splurge it would definitely be a Coach diaper bag.  I have already done some online window shopping...

I have that Vera bag! I bought it right before Christmas when it was on sale for 49.99.

That being said, I don't think the bag has to match the baby. The outside of the bag is more for mama. I think that Vera bag is something that can be carried for years because it doesn't look babyish.

I might be the minority here, but I chose a black Timi Leslie bag. It looks like a purse, not a diaper bag. I didn't want a diaper bag that looked like a diaper bag. My plan is to have that for me and then we are getting just a basic SkipHop bag for my DH to use/take for daycare.

So with DD I thought I would get something really girly because I LOVE purses and was into the whole pink thing at the time.  When I went to the store (a place you 'design' your own purses), I couldn't find something super girly I loved.  So I went with something green/yellow/beige/grey/black - which I loved.  I also got the biggest one there because I knew I would need the space.  (I cannot show you the colors because they are constantly changing their patterns: https://www.1154lill.com/shop.axd/CustomBagProduct?bagnbr=138)

DH refuses to carry a diaper bag.  If he is going out with DD by himself he carries a backback.  I tried to get him one of those 'man' diaper bags but he will not have it!

Just FYI - Petunia bags go on sale at Nordstrom for their anniversary sale in July.  I saw them this past year.

My dh picked out the first one because he was very concerned about what it would look like I don't think he has ever carried it I hate it.....we got a free backpack one in the hospital and I love it it is small simple black and one strap easy to throw over ur back and hold baby although I don't know if it'll be enough room for two babies' supplies

With DS1 I made the mistake of going cheap I got a $25 graco bag it was brown with green elephants. The zipper broke within a couple months and I didn't like the fabric changing pad. Since we normally leave the bag in the car I didn't get a new bag until I was 8 months pregnant with DS2. 

I went to a local boutique (sells cloth diapers) and asked what they recommended for 2 in cloth. I got a JJ Cole bag, it's gray with green and purple paisley I didn't care that it was "girly". It fits enough diapers for both kids and the other random stuff I carry for them. But because it's so big unless we're going to be out for hours we leave it in the van. DS1 has a Skip Hop monkey backpack I'll put snacks and toys in for short trips.

I chose a Vera Bradley diaper bag that has pink and green flowers all over it and I didn't give a shitt if I was having a boy or girl nor if H minded it, lol. I will continue to use it for this kid, boy or girl.

And my H doesn't have a problem carrying a floral diaper bag. It's a diaper bag; it would be ridiculous for anyone to judge a dad for carrying a diaper bag, regardless of color. I honestly find it silly when men need to get their own manly bag [UO?]. ETA: I SAH, though, and I am the one carrying the bag 90 percent of the time. I worked one day a week and H didn't mind using my bag on that day, or when we were all out together. If he were the one SAH, I'm sure he would've had more to say about my pink floral jobby, lol.

I put a really nice messenger bag-looking one on the registry for my husband that he'll be proud to wear! As for me, I'm still debating whether to even get a diaper bag or just go with a large enough (fab, cute and fashionable) purse in a classic chocolate or black that I'll use diapers or not which I've read can also work well. I think the black/brown impulse is a bit of a New York thing. Anytime I buy bright and bold colors I just end up wearing them in the summer or not using them at all so I'll stick with what I know I'll be comfortable wearing.

Ive been looking at a couple differnt styles of the 31 bags and I really like them and will probably end up with one of those. They are a little higher then I really want to spend but they are really sturdy and durable.

Honestly, I made SO pick the bag and then I had the power of veto. I wanted him to feel comfortable carrying the bag sometimes.

I have a brown Vera Bradley that I actually have been using to carry my school work back and forth since I'm a teacher. I figured that could be for my husband or a grandma bag, since my mother and motherinlaw will be keeping the baby some after I go back to work.

The husband also bought me a Coach diaper bag for Christmas. It's bluishgreen. It can look more blue, depending on the light. We don't know what we are having yet, but if it's a girl, I just plan to tie a scarf on the handle that will give it a more girly feel and add a pop of color. I was thinking some kind of cute yellow print would really be nice.

I'm so glad you posted about the JJ Cole bags!  I've been dreading finding a diaper bag that was functional and looked cute enough to carry around every day--I think I've found it! 

Awesome! I have the mode tote style, but I was just looking at their website and now I want a Norah in black and white. I think it would be hard sell to dh though since he keeps saying how great it is that we don't have to buy anything this time.

I am picking it like I would pick a purse. I will pick the color and style I like without considering whether the baby is a boy or girl.

I have a basic black backpack diaper bag that was handy for travel.  Also have a Petunia Pickle tweed bag that is cute, but not very practical. 

I think I'm going to get this one this time around.  I kind of regret not getting a Skip Hop the first time.  I do love the Timi and Leslie bags, too.

Didn't read the other replies buuuut... I always figure with a diaper bag you are going to be carrying it most of the time, might as well pick one you like. And since the baby won't be carrying it ever, definitely don't need to base it on them.
