Fear Adrenaline and Pregnancy

Hello, I'm 4 months pregnant and had a situation at work. I'm really worried and need some advice. There was a really scary situation that happened, which I can't really get into now, but it caused me to get that fear adrenaline feeling twice. You know that feeling where you go numb, quick chill, heart racing feeling. Could this cause a miscarriage. I had a miscarriage a few months ago and 2 days before I started to bleed and cramp, I had that same fear adrenaline feeling. I was only about 2 or 3 weeks pregnant at the time, and the doc said it was probably a chemical pregnancy. I still can't help to think it was because of that adrenaline feeling I had felt days before. What are your thoughts, and have any of you felt that fear adrenaline while pregnant. Thanks so much for your time, I warmly appreciate it.

Re: Fear Adrenaline and Pregnancy

  • I'm so sorry you're going through this. What type of work do you do?

The good news is that miscarriage is likely caused by chromosomal abnormalities, not fear and stress. Maybe you could try talking to a therapist about ways to cope with stressful situations so you don't get so scared. Again, I'm really sorry that happened to you.

Thank you for being so empathetic. It really means a lot. Your words and educated comment really made me have some comfort. I just want this baby to be healthy and strong. Best wishes to you and your baby; he or she has a wonderful mommy! :

    Probably not.

The impact fear or stress has on your fertility is that acute stress can delay ovulation, which is the science behind that idiot Akin and his 'legitimate rape doesn't cause pregnancy', supposing that its always stressful enough to delay ovulation.

But past ovulation, stress or fear should not impact your ability to carry a pregnancy to term. "Helpful" people will tell you that you shouldn't be stressed during pg cause its bad for you. But I'm pretty sure stress isn't any worse during pg than it is all the time, and the main concern would be stress affecting your sleeping or eating which isn't good for you especially if it persists for awhile.

If you're really worried you can always call your doc, they're used to calls from worried pg women! But I think you'll be fine.

Very informative and thoughtful. Thank you so much for that! You definitely are one of the helpful people, I wish there were more of you in the world!! Thanks again and all the best to you!
  • very sorry to hear about your loss. what you describe sounds like a panic/anxiety attack. I am prone to them, especially in hospitals. My body goes numb, circultion cuts off, breathing changes, get dizzy, ect. Maybe let your doctor know you have anxiety tendencies? Not trying to be rude, I experience them and my OB said that anxiety attacks are VERY dangerous while pregnant. Not sure about miscarriages as result, but your baby's stress directly corrolates with yours. I fought it, but my OB put me on a pregnancy safe anxiety med to help-21w and a very healthy, happy baby (: best of luck!

Thank you very much! Yes, I do suffer from anxiety but it's been very seldom this pregnancy. This was the first adrenaline feeling I've had in months. I've been in really great control over my anxiety; for the baby of course. I have an appoitment on Wednesday, so I'll talk to my doc then. I'm glad to hear you and your baby are doing great! It's nice to know I'm not the only one who has felt this; but sad to hear you have to go through it to. All the best to you and your little one! I'm sure all of our babies will be healthy and strong! Thanks Again!

Happy to hear you are stronger than your anxiety! My OB works with my mom, so he knew that we just went through a month of living in the hospital with my sister from an accident, and she passed within days of conception. When it comes down to it, you know yourself best and you make the final calls when it comes to your pregnancy/baby. But I had to agree with him on the meds, and have to say I am happy I did. We have had some antibody issues, and very difficult & rude people at hospitals out of town where SO is for work trying to get his blood work done (we spent 6 weeks trying to get a test done that doesnt exist!), and while I had a few minor attacks in result, they weren't that bad. I honestly wouldn't go as far as saying the meds saved my baby or lessened the intensity of my attacks though, I'm thinking if nothing else I am experiencing the placebo effect lol. But I will say it's worth a talk with the doctor, my little Colby Quinn stops moving after I get very anxious yet has no adverse effects from the meds, so in my opinion we are benefitting from them. You know what's best for you though! Congrats on baby and have a happy&healthy pregnancy (:

  • I'm sorry to hear that you went through something so stressful. But I have been told that stress in yourself can cause stress in the baby, and it raises the baby's heartrate. I know this last part for a fact because I witnessed it. When I was pregnant with DS I was in the ER for contractions and I was too emotional and stressed and ended up getting sick. Due to the stress DS's heartrate shot up to almost 200bpm right after I threw up. I was hooked up to a fetal monitor, so it showed exactly what happened (BTW, DS is just fine :) )

I don't think stressful situations can cause a miscarriage this far into the pregnancy though, baby should be fine. But I would still talk to your Dr at your appt just for piece of mind. If you're too worried to wait, give them a call.

  • somerandomchick, Akin didn't say that "its always stressful enough" to delay ovulation (please correct  me if I'm remembering it wrongly), but certainly if rape isn't "stressful" enough, perhaps *in some cases* they are false accusations (that is what is meant by "legitimate rape"). The fact that you understand this very well, and are still calling him an "idiot" calls into question your judgment on this matter. The only thing idiotic about his comment is that it was said in the wrong political environment in front of a people who are determined to take it the worst possible way for their own political advantage: people being stupid *on purpose* because they know what they can gain from whipping people into a furor. It's disgusting. Now, perhaps, he is an idiot, but I wouldn't say that based on those particular statements.

    That being said....

OP, I  highly doubt that the feelings you have experienced is going to cause harm to the baby. So long as you aren't experiencing it constantly, everything should be fine. The human body can handle a great deal of stress; it's made for that to help us survive.

Thank you for your comment! Yes, I worry about the baby's heartbeat, so when I felt that feeling, I immediately tried to calm myself and slow my heart. It seemed to work. After I went into our lounge and took a few deep breaths and let out some years to release the stress. I will definitely talk to the doc and Wednesday I'll be able to see my little angel in the sonogram and talk to the doctor about any anxiety that may come up. Thanks again, I really appreciate it! Best wishes!

That makes me feel so much better; I don't feel that feeling often and try to be calm most of the time. I hope I'm far along now that the baby is stuck to me! Thanks for your thoughts, very comforting! All you ladies have been great and giving educated comments, and that is priceless. Thanks again, all the best to you and your baby!
  • I'm so sorry you had to face this situation at all, let alone when you are pregnant and already nervous because of your previous loss. What you're describing is the activation of your fight-flight-freeze response. It happens when we feel threatened. For some people who have experienced trauma in their pasts, this response gets activated easier than for the average person. (Trauma might be a history of physical/sexual/emotional abuse, surviving rape or another violent crime, enduring a natural disaster, witnessing abuse or violence, etc.-- but it could also be that your recent loss has been really hard on you.) While the fright won't cause a miscarriage, frequent fight-flight-freeze episodes in pregnancy create an environment of chronic stress for the fetus... and you!  If you find yourself being very scared, easily startled, etc., you might consider seeking some help. I'm speaking as someone who has received treatment for traumatic stress and now works in the mental health field helping others process their own experiences. You can learn breathing exercises and meditations that can help you feel calmer and safer.

    My thoughts are with you.

Thank you, you're very sweet! This is, thank goodness, the only time I've experienced this particular feeling. I feel much better now and always practice breathing excercises when I feel anxious. Luckily, I've learned to control my anxiety this pregnancy. This one experience recently, caught me off gaurd, that's why I freaked out. You're right, I think the trauma of my previous loss has something to do with it. Thank you for your thoughtful comment, I appreciate it. All the best to you!
  • When some women are in labor they can experience adrenaline and while I am not going to get into the whole schpeel of it all I will say point blank, no. Your baby is fine. If you find yourself having trouble maintaining any anxiety though just talk to you OB.

  • I had a very scary airplane flight a few weeks back (right before christmas), that caused serious fear adrenaline in my system.  I am a frequent traveler and have been in bad flights before but this one was the first where I actually felt like the plane was in real danger of not getting us down safely (70 MPH wind sheers, and an aborted landing).

I was worried about the extreme stress to my system, it sure woke my LO up and he was really kicking and flipping around for about an hour after we landed.

Everything is fine now though, I think the adrenaline gets their heart rate up too and when we calm down so do they.
