Skip 18 month appointment?

We just had LBB's 15 month appointment.  He passed with such flying colors, and is already where some 18 month olds are developmentally that we were given the option of skipping his 18 month appointment and just coming back at 24 months.

I'm going to run this by DH, but would you be comfortable skipping the 18 month appointment?   I know eventually they go to yearly appointments, but there is something a little reassuring about going in more frequently.

Re: Skip 18 month appointment?

  • I would go but my insurance covers it at 100%, I don't have to take time off from work and the pedi is less than 10 minutes from my house. I think just checking in to make sure hes on track is a good idea. You don't want to go into his 24 month appt and realize something isn't what it should be. I'm sure he would be fine if you skipped but I would go just to go.

  • I wouldn't skip. I like the reassurance of going in at this age since DD can't really tell me if something in particular is bothering her. Like her ear infections. She's always so good and happy that we never know she has one until her eyes get goopy or the one time we found out randomly at her 6mo appt that she had one. So yea,
    I'd go.

  • I would keep the appointment.  It is a free check up(w/ insurance) why not?  You may have a question or something that arises before 24 months.

  • I would skip it. Especially if everything is going well. I feel like they have us bring kids in for all these check-ups so often because the docs like to collect our co-pays. Don't get me wrong, I know checkups have a purpose, but they are really frequent IMO.

But do whatever you are comfortable with! Smile

  • I don't know if its normal or not, but we were told at his year visit that he didn't need to come back until 18 months. It was the check out lady so I'm not sure if she was confused, I kept meaning to call so I guess I need to get on that!

  • I would go. Aren't there shots at 18 months, too? Plus, I would like to know he is staying on track.

  • I would go but just because I am a slightly paranoid mother. I would be more re-assured seeing the Dr.

  • I would go too. I'm sure everything would be fine if you didn't, but it's not a chance I would be comfortable taking. You never know if an issue will creep up between now and 24 months. There may be something thing that you wouldn't notice, but a trained eye would be more likely to pick up.
  • I would go.

Gator's Ped told us at her 12mo appointment that he would see us at 18mo. They don't do 15mo check ups there unless there is a need.

No shots. The 18 month is just height, weight, and development.

I find it so interesting that the schedule is different here.  We've got a shot at 18 months.

  • We have shots at 18 months so we'll be going. Also I feel like she will be so different then and I love our pedi so much that we're happy to visit with her even if it's just for a few moments.
  • I would make the 18 month appointment, but wait until then to see if I still felt like not going. If he is fine and healthy at that time and I felt the same way, then I'd skip it.

(I'm not sure if I made any sense. I was up for most of the night with a sick baby)

  • I would go if it's free. Our vaccination schedule is so confusing that I like to hear what she needs next and when. Having said that, I just realized around Christmas that we skipped the one year health check. She had a cold all through October and November and we were at the doc's so much that I forgot we hadn't done the checkup. They didn't say anything either. So nothing for L between 10 months and 18 months.

  • I wouldn't skip it.  R has one more vaccine to get at that appointment, so that greatly colors my answer!
