Still struggling nap transition

The first couple days went well with more night sleep and OK nap.  But now 3wks in and I'm ready to punch a wall.  I wonder if I might have to go back to 2 naps.  N has always been early riser and we're doing early bedtime (6pm) to make up for the early and one nap which is 11-12 or 11-1 on a good day.  SO while she gets a good 11hours at night that means up for the day at 5am so generally over tired by the time 11am rolls around -- then if the nap is short (as today) it is still 6 hours to the early bed time.

I was trying to do gradual move but I'm wondering if I should just go to 11:30 -- do lunch before her nap and see what happens.  That makes for a long awake time in the am but I think it might be the only option since this 11:00 nap maybe just feels like a late morning nap and in order to shift her internal clock it needs to be later.

Ugh.

Re: Still struggling nap transition

  • Did she cut her 2nd nap, or did you? It sounds like she would still benefit from having 2 naps. The nap transition is made by the LO when he/she is ready for only 1 nap. Some babies aren't ready until later, it just depends on them.

Some days O will only take one nap, like yesterday, other days, like today, she will have 2.

  • Agree with all the above.  Take a week or two and just go off of her cues of when to put her down to nap.  We still do this with J on the weekends, because he doesn't do the same thing he does at daycare.  Sometimes it's one nap, sometimes it's two.

  • She dropped the nap -- I actually prefer two naps for the rest and because she sleeps a bit later in the am.  She was refusing her pm nap and when she did take it it was short and late which meant she wasn't tired for a 7pm bedtime so I thought she was ready for one nap.  And it seems we are just in a yuck zone of not quite ready for one nap all the time.  Some days it works and she sleeps two hours and is fine.  Other days she clearly needs two.  So yes, I guess we are going to play it by year.  What may happen is she does one nap at daycare and two naps at home for a bit.  I may have to cancel music class and play group which is a bummer but oh well.  My priority is her rest and she has always been on the low end of sleep needs (never 12 hour nights or 3 hour naps) but happy with 10-11 at night and 2 or so during the day.
