Reusable menstrual cups

Hello, ladies!

I usually post on the parenting board, but thought you could help me with this. I posted tonight about how I get horrible chaffing from tampon strings and pads and some ladies recommended reusable cups.

I thought you guys might have more advice or recommendations for me. Where can I research different brands? If my issues are due to an allergy, I'd like something hypoallergenic if possible. Do any brands do this? How do I figure out sizing? I'd love to be able to hike/run/bike with one... is that at all doable?

Thanks, ladies!

Re: Reusable menstrual cups

  • I have used both the Diva Cup and the Lunette, size 2.  I love my Lunette.  I can run, bike, hike, dance and do martial arts in it and it NEVER leaks.  It is made from surgical grade silicone, so allergies shouldn't be a problem.  With any menstrual cup, inserting can take some practice.  If I twist it 90 degrees after inserting, I get a better seal.

  • I adore my Diva Cup! I play roller derby and it never once came loose with all of the drills, falling, and skating. I've gone running and swimming with it in and never had a problem either. I know there are two sizes and they recommend size 2 for ladies who have had babies.

Another vote for the Lunette.  I did a lot of research through LiveJournal's menstrual cup community.  They have a lot of information about finding the right cup for your specific size and shape - along with useful compilations of the dimensions of all the cups available.

  • Just know that not every cup works for every woman. I originally bought the Diva and just could never get it to work for me. Then I tried the Lunette size 1 even though the size two is recommended for me since I've had children. So, even by following all the recommendations you might have a little trial and error to go through as well. Once you get it figured out its great!!
  • I used to love the diva cup, but they made a change to it in the past couple years and when i bought a replacement i found it just wouldn't work for me anymore the rim was thinner and not as sturdy....

I wouldn't recommend it anymore, mostly because their customer service was awful when I contacted them to find out about the design change...

  • I ordered a DivaCup size 2 because I've had a baby and I'm over 30... but it's too big for me.  I read online somewhere after that if (TMI) you can touch your cervix then you need a smaller cup.  Wish I had known that earlier.  I cut off the entire stem and it was still uncomfortable, so I turn it inside out now and it's better.  I'm going to give it another month and if it's not great then I will order a smaller one.  Possibly Lunette because of better reviews.

  • I have used the cup pre prego and post, I never had an issue, well, after I took the time to really get the technique down. MAKE SURE YOU BREAK THE SUCTION BEFORE YOU PULL IT OUT!  I have heard of,  after many years of women not breaking the suction, their uterus prolapsing. YIKES.

  • I love the diva cup. I had a problem with heavy flows for a while and i would leak a lot.  A diva cup is 2oz i believe. I read you loose less then that in a cycle though there are other fluids.  Tmi...I was filling the cup to overflowing several times a day. Once my cycles got back to normal it worked great!  Just something to keep in mind.  Also be sure once you have it in make sure it turns easily to ensure its correct placement, and then with two fingers gently squeese it and let goto create a seal.
  • i love my moon cup however i have never used any other like the diva or lunette
  • I had a Diva cup before I got pregnant with DD and got a size 2 Lady Cup after she was born. I think I prefer the Lady Cup. It's more comfortable. I don't remember exactly how much it cost, but I think it was a little cheaper too. Kinda weird- you buy it from a Czechoslovakian website. You can find the Diva Cup at Whole Foods.
