Babies: 6 - 9 Months

coughing at night...

Today he had a low grade fever, super runny nose, and a cough (barky) every couple of minutes.  We are headed to the pedi in the morning.

He's in bed now and has been for a couple of hours and already he's been up several times because he keeps waking himself from the cough.  I have a cool mist humidifer running, am breastfeeding him often for fluids, elevated his crib on one end (blankets under the mattress) and gave tylenol for his fever.

Anything else I can do to make him more comfortable tonight??

Re: coughing at night...

  • Is it cool outside? The cold is good for the Barking cough, it reduces the inflammation. Bundle him and yourself up and go outside for 5-10 minutes.

  • When DD is like this I also do saline nasal drops.  I figure it will drip back in her throat and help loosen anything that might be causing the cough.

You are doing a great job!

  • Clean his nose. The reason why he is coughing is because the mucus is going down his throat.

  • This has happened to my daughter on 2 occasions and it turned out to be bronchiolitis.  She was put on Albuterol and it helped her coughing at night almost immediately.  The only crummy thing is Albuterol generally makes LO's hyper so some nights she wasn't falling asleep until 1130... she's usually asleep by 7pm.  Ugh. Good luck!
