Natural Birth

Pediatrician

I am just about 21 weeks along now, and plan to have baby Gavin at our midwife practice birth center. They have told us that since he will not be seen by a pediatrician (like they do in the hospital) that he will need to be checked out within 48 hours of his birth.

Being the complete type A that I am, and having never had a child before, I decided to start researching pediatricians now. My husband and I just moved to Florida in August from New York, so we don't have a huge network down here yet. Friends of ours have 3 little ones so I decided to call their pediatrician to start with.

I just got off the phone with them. I figured I would ask if they accept our insurance and when can I call to get him in for his check up... instead they outright told me that they refuse to see babies born in a birth center. What the heck is that about??

Re: Pediatrician

  • I don't know if things are different in Canada or not.. but my LO won't actually see a pedi.  The LO will just go to the family practice that DH and I see.  Will your regular doctor be able to do the 48 hour checkup?

  • That's definitely not standard practice in Florida.  Friends of min just had a birth center birth and took their LO to see the pedi on the same day before they went home.  What part of Florida are you in?

  • Try some family practices, they might be more open to out of hospital births. Does your midwife have any recommendations? I'd imagine she knows the hippy doctors! :

We're in the Tampa area. After I spoke to them, I was really upset so DH called the office. The lady he spoke to said she doesn't understand why they refuse babies born out of a hospital, but just knows that is and has been their practice for a long time now. The office manager is going to call him tomorrow with details (just for our own knowledge). I have my A/S tomorrow so I plan on talking to the midwife and seeing who they recommend.

I am in the Tampa area as well, was it a Pediatric Healthcare Alliance office? That is where I took DD since birth (Suncoast office)  but she was born in a hospital. I am planning a homebirth with this LO though, so I hope they don't give me a problem. It has never occurred to me that it would be an issue.

No it was a place in Trinity. My midwife printed a whole page of birth center and home birth friendly pediatricians. If you get any resistance from yours let me know and I'll get you some names :)
